California is on its way to passing a new law that makes it illegal to call transgender senior citizens a pronoun they don't like. For example, if an elderly person who was born male and lives in a long-term care facility wishes to be called "her" or "she," the workers there had better do it or face the consequences. The proposed law would even apply to Christian facilities.
SB 219, titled the "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Long-Term Care Facility Resident's Bill of Rights," states, "It shall be unlawful for a long-term care facility or facility staff to.... willfully and repeatedly fail to use a resident's preferred name or pronouns after being clearly informed of the preferred name or pronouns." It imposes fines and jail time on any long-term care employee who refuses to use transgender pronouns. Fines for repeat offenders could be as high as $1,000 and a jail term of up to a year.
The bill will also mandate bathrooms and rooming situations be designated by gender identity and not biological sex. There are no exemptions for long term care facilities run by religious institutions who integrate their beliefs about gender into their policies and practices.
Critics of the law fought against it. California Family Council's Greg Burt testified before the California Assembly Judiciary Committee saying, "How can you believe in free speech, but think the government can compel people to use certain pronouns when talking to others?" He added, "Compelled speech is not free speech. Can the government compel a newspaper to use certain pronouns that aren't even in the dictionary? Of course not, or is that coming next?"
Burt continued, "Those proposing this bill are saying, 'If you disagree with me about my view of gender, you are discriminating against me,'" saying, "This is not tolerance. This is not love. This is not mutual respect. True tolerance tolerates people with different views. We need to treat each other with respect, but respect is a two-way street. It is not respectful to threaten people with punishment for having sincerely held beliefs that differ from your own."
Despite Burt's objections, the measure, which is sponsored by the group Equality California and authored by San Francisco Senator Scott Wiener, sailed through committee without even one vote against it.
If this bill sounds familiar, perhaps it's because Canada's Senate overwhelmingly passed similar legislation last month. The Canadian transgender right bill adds "gender expression" and "gender identity" to Canada's Human Rights Code and to the Criminal Code's hate crime section. This, despite objections from critics who argued it is a threat to freedom of expressions and legalizes false ideas about gender. Critics further worried that people who denied this gender theory could be charged with hate crimes, fined, jailed, and compelled to undergo anti-bias training.
This is a great way for crotchety old folks to harass nursing home staff. It also begs for another law criminalizing nursing homes for transferring their disagreeable clients. Enacting laws that require enactment of still more fix-it again laws make great lefty self-licking ice cream cones.
It’ll get you put in Facebook jail, I can attest to that.
Play it safe - just refer to them all as “It”.
People have always done that.
“We’re going to have a baby!”
“Great! Do you know what it is?”
“When is it due?”
Civil War II can’t come soon enough, and neither can razing California to the ground like Dresden.
The rest of the country thinks California is nuts because of it’s politicians. (and they’re right)
Kamala Harris doesn’t stand a chance.
Another political Wiener obsessed with sex!
Sh*thead works for all of them too
WA state isn’t far behind I’m sure but I’m very glad my money is finally out of the CA cesspool of liberalism.
Given the chance, the majority of politicians would gladly turn this into an oppressive, fascist police state that controls every aspect of life and determines the path of every cent of money that exists. They would, of course, exempt themselves.
You fascists can go **** yourselves.
I knew this is the way it would go. Politicians have far too much power over our lives. We do not have the right of free speech. Haven’t had it for decades. They will be able to tell the people to do anything - so long as they don’t take away their precious TV sitcoms.
To any politician believing this is the way to go - **** you!
Repeat offenders could be fined 1,000 and face a year in jail! Wow!
What ever happened to sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me?
Sacramento should be nuked from orbit, you know, too be sure.

Hey California government! I made my money in your state, then moved to a no income tax state when I started drawing my retirement :-) I know you tried to make that illegal at one time but you got shot down.:-):-)

What if we simply use, “hey mentally deranged buttwipe”?
We have a first amendment and a buttwipe is a buttwipe.
Sorry, losers. You have the right to control what words come out of your own mouths. You do not have the right to control what words come out of mine.
Tough.
This is absolutely wrong. Seniors living in nursing facilities should be the last people subjected to this stuff.
I spent a lot of time with my father who was in a facility, with a lot of Alzheimer’s patients. They are confused enough and do not need this type of messing around with their grasp on reality.
