I think you sir, it’s always nice to receive encouragement from someone who is a gentleman and a scholar.
Just like Rosa Parks.
See my post 32.
Hmmmm ... maybe. On the other hand, it's reasonable for a prospective employer to believe that a smoker would spend less time on the job than a non-smoker, due to the smoker's going off, at intervals, to wherever he is allowed to smoke.
Note that I said "reasonable to believe": this might not prove out under observation of a large group of smokers vs. nonsmokers, since there are many other reasons one employee might be away from his work more than another. If any well-designed, large-scale studies have been done on this question, I have not read about them.
“Secondhand smoke is a killer and wreaks havoc on the health of innocent bystanders, so YES, they are discriminated against and they deserve it!”
Secondhand smoke is not a killer. Your bad habit may be next.
Much as I love my smoking pals and friends, I don’t want to breathe that garbage. That’s my choice. Remember, having a smoking section in a bar or restaurant is no different than having a “peeing section” in a swimming pool.
“In general, it is not the smoker himself who is “discriminated against,” but the behavior of smoking. A smoker may go into a restaurant and eat a meal, just as a nonsmoker may. He just may not smoke while he’s there, any more than the nonsmoker may light an incense burner.”
If we still had property rights, the owner of the establishment could choose to have smoking or non smoking and customers could choose where to go. It is called a free market.
“Cool people; happy, rich successful people do not smoke.”
No, they snort cocaine and kill their livers with drinks; the ones who are not obese.
“Cool people; happy, rich successful people do not smoke.”
Go to a college campus.
Thirty years ago, at least half the students smoked, now maybe 5% smoke.
Yes, the fact that Colorado does all it can to encourage marijuana smoking, while joining in on the crackdown against tobacco, is amusing.
You know that's not true, right? OTOH, secondhand smoke does wreak havoc on folks with asthma and other lung/sinus issues without a doubt.
No worries. You'll be dead within the next 50 years anyway, unless of course you're one of those people who will live forever.
Your post 32 is excellent my FRiend!
“Years ago, I was having a smoke outside with a friend after work. No other people were around us when a short, overly obese man (400 lbs?) shuffled past us, waved the second hand smoke away and remarked that we were killing him with the second-hand smoke.”
I got in an elevator with a man who said “You smoke - you stink!” I replied and you had (a bowel movement) this morning didn’t you?
Oh, a discriminator not a hater. I see. LOL!
Discrimination on its own is not a moral thing, any more than choosing chocolate over vanilla is a moral thing. Where it can be applied in ways that can be percieved as a moral thing is stuff like discriminating against someone because of their race and sometimes their sex. I say sometimes because it is not immoral to choose a woman as your wife rather than a man. Though there are some that would like to change that.
I’m in IT. Most of the things computer programs I have written in my career do can be described as “discrimination”. It’s a major part of what they do. It is what “binary” logic is all about.
Discriminate is not a dirty word. It is actually critical to living a happy life.
There are employers that prohibit smoking tobacco even in off hours and when Walt Disney had the policy it wasn’t even in insurance concern.
He didn’t let them snoke or have facial hair and he violated both.

I agree with you 100%. Additionally, I believe an employer should be legally allowed to say, “I am going to hire only smokers,” or “I am going to hire only nonsmokers,” or “I am going to hire only vegans,” or whatever his thing is.
I have no problem with bans inside buildings, no problem with bans outside in areas that are close to or funnel to entrances. To ban smoking outdoors away from buildings is nonsense.
Funny thing is I hear in places marijuana is legal they want to allow marijuana smoking in pot stores, and bakeries that cater to them, some bars. So now we are at the point where people will likely be allowed to smoke pot in places where regular cigarettes have been banned for quite some time. Irony.
