Rent increases, evictions up in immigrant communities under Trump, housing lawyers say
Sacramento Bee ^ | July 10, 2017 | Angela Hart

When Maria got an eviction notice telling her she had to be out of her Redwood City apartment by late February, she thought something seemed fishy.

She contacted housing attorneys, who confirmed to her landlord that the notice was not served legally and she didn’t have to move out right away.

Her landlord responded with a text message threatening to call immigration authorities on Maria if she didn’t comply, saying it was a “duty” to report anyone who is undocumented.

This is crazy. Illegal aliens are not supposed to be living here, period. They CERTAINLY should not be living in government subsidized housing meant for U.S. citizens. Evict them and deport them.

“...they are scared to get their food stamps but now their rent is going up and they are too worried about deportation to sleep.”

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Do these people expect sympathy? They still don’t “get” that that’s why WE elected DJT for President. This is what we WANT. No sympathy.

They want you to feel guilty.

““I was worried what would happen to them, and for me, too,” she said. “I’m not a criminal.””

Yes Maria you are committing a crime by housing and helping your illegal family members. You admitted knowing they are illegal and with you. Maria who are you to think you are entitled to exceptions to the law?

I wish.
In areas I drive through at times they are building 4-5story apt complexes all over claiming its for thousands 18-early 20’s moving out of parents and college, when in reality I see more and more people in unusual dress and language for this area on the streets, all the while the known illegal alien areas are untouched as far as getting them evicted and deported.

“Rent increases, evictions up in immigrant communities “

“You mean illegal immigrant.”

An immigrant is here legally. Calling someone an “illegal immigrant” is like calling a poodle a cat-dog.
It’s like agreeing to call a he a she, or the cat-dog’s tail a leg so that it is a five-legged cat-dog ...
Calling a he a she doesn’t make him a her.
Calling a tail a leg doesn’t make it a leg.
And calling an illegal alien an immigrant doesn’t make him.her an immigrant.

You mean illegal alien.

At least most of the comments section see right through SacBee’s attempt at fake journalism....

For real. Who is the Bee’s target audience here? Who are they trying to convince?

I lived in the Sacramento area briefly while stationed at Travis AFB. Public schools weren’t even an option to us, after hearing about the crowded classes that move at the slowest illegal’s pace.

And that was 15 years ago. I’m surprised the legal residents aren’t incensed by now.

If the name on the lease is fake is the contract null and void?

I agree with you.

Six out of the seven least affordable metropolitan areas across the U.S. are in California. They are Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, San Diego, Riverside and Sacramento.

These landlords see an opportunity to kick out the illegals to open up space for young professionals looking for cheap housing most likely.

It's good for landlords because it improves the stability of their income, improves the neighorhood business stability and as the area is reclaimed the property values increase....

It's a vicious circle that pushes out illegals and the poor....if anyone is to blame for that condition it is the Commiefornia political class. Giving away free stuff costs money. Illegals are there for free stuff. It's no surprise that they should pay the consequences for their own gaming of the system.

I say BOO f-ing hoo, Maria...get used to it. It's your NEW NORMAL.

Yup, higher housing prices are but one additional way citizens are supporting illegals. You’d better believe 40 million people worth of housing demand is going to drive prices up!

Thank you for posting this article. I agree with you that if there were less demand for California rental properties, rents wouldn't continue to increase at such a steep rate.

This article's headline blames Trump for the problem. However, in the body of the article there is this bit of reality: Even before Donald Trump’s presidency, landlords across California were capitalizing on the state’s tight housing market by jacking up rent, delaying costly health and safety repairs and evicting tenants to move in higher-income renters, housing attorneys say. So there is an acknowledgement that the tight housing market and increasing rents were an issue even before Trump's presidency.

The article also has this gem: Backing up lawyers’ reports with specific data is difficult.

Backing up lawyers’ reports with specific data is difficult. No agencies track data on the reasons people are evicted or loss of housing due to someone’s immigration status.

...

At least SacBee is admitting it’s putting out fake news.

Here we go again. Whenever there’s a Republican president, people drop dead in the streets, rats gnaw at their dead bodies, rents go up, families are thrown out in the streets, hordes of homeless crowd the sidewalks, 90 year olds are placed in their wheelchairs and pushed off a cliff, aids cases triple, the moon slows in its orbit, and the polar bears freeze to death.

Rent control is an uncompensated taking.

When I buy a multi-family rental building the price is based on the rents that building produces. It is an investment.

When a city or a state controls rent they are taking part of the future appreciation of my investment from me for the public purpose of lowering housing prices. No it is not a total taking, but they are stealing my future income and appreciation from me.
