Trump administration removes protections for Yellowstone grizzly bears

The Trump administration is removing Endangered Species Act protections for Yellowstone grizzly bears, after they spent more than four decades on the threatened list.

The Interior Department’s Fish and Wildlife Service announced the delisting decision Thursday, which immediately drew rebukes from conservationists and Democrats.

Officials said that conservation efforts for the bear, a more than fourfold increase in its population and state policies designed to protect the bears show that the delisting is warranted.

The Yellowstone grizzly bear lives in and around Yellowstone National Park in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho.

“This achievement stands as one of America’s great conservation successes; the culmination of decades of hard work and dedication on the part of state, tribal, federal and private partners,” Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, who represented Montana in Congress until earlier this year, said in a statement. “As a Montanan, I am proud of what we’ve achieved together.” Other segments of the grizzly bear population are not affected by Thursday’s regulation and will continue to be protected as before.

The bear’s population is now around 700, compared with 150 when it was first listed. Its range is 22,500 square miles, more than double the range of the mid-1970s.

every citizen would get 40 acres if they split up the national parks. I think you’d have to have a lottery to make it fair about where you get land.

I think a group of Democrats should travel to Yellowstone and link arms with the bears in a show of solidarity against this action by the Trump administration.

So the fact that they have had success like this: “he bear’s population is now around 700, compared with 150 when it was first listed. Its range is 22,500 square miles, more than double the range of the mid-1970s” means nothing?

Does this mean once an animal is listed as endangered it always remains that way?

I am not an expert, but that the bears have more than quadrupled in numbers and increased their range is perhaps worrisome for the people living around there. If I were the parent of small children living near the park, I would be happy at this news. Though unarmed adults don’t have much of a chance either, I would imagine.

Im 10 miles out of Moyie Springs Idaho, and there are plenty of grizz up here. I bet that 700 number is a very very low guess. Ive seen one last year by Bonner lake. They are not begging for food (a grizz just takes what they want anyhow) yet, but it isnt uncommon to see one a few times a year.

I’ve encountered grizzlies in the Bob Marshall and Scapegoat wildernesses. Neither near Yellowstone.

I am not in favor of bear preserves where people congregate.

I agree; ban people from Yellowstone.

Why not? They are far more likely to eat the starry eyed tree hugger libtard than the situationally aware and probably armed conservative. ;-)

The land constitutionally goes to the states. The people of each state through their representatives would decide what to do with the land.

There are now enough grizzly bears that homo sapiens is on the endangered species list.

This is one area I don’t understand why my fellow conservatives don’t embrace more enthusiastically. We are historically the party of conservation and heritage. We should embrace responsibly conserving our beautiful natural resources. My .02.

I live about a half hour north of the north YP entrance. We never saw grizzlies in our area until about the last five years, now we see at least one each year.
