Learning English is a much bigger hurdle for immigrants than earlier believed, with most Hispanics being functional illiterates, even those who have been in the United States for over a decade.
A new analysis of immigrants found that 63 percent of Hispanics have a "below basic" understanding of English, making them illiterate.
And it doesn't get better if they stay in the U.S. for 15 years. In a shocking finding showing that they haven't tried to learn -- or even had to -- more, 67 percent, of Hispanics don't have English proficiency even after 15 years in America.
The Center for Immigration Studies found that overall immigrants of all nationalities have difficulty with English. Some 41 percent score at or below the lowest level of English literacy.

For some reason I think that point,as specified in the piece, was puberty.

Makes sense to me. When I hit puberty all my brain could think about was sex.
The real problem began many, many years ago. The LEFT in CA decided to teach the Hispanics in their own language; along with a LITTLE English.
Thus, the Hispanics never truly assimilated into the population; they couldn’t get jobs (because they couldn’t speak, read or write English). This is the “compassion” of the left.
Unless you require people from other countries to learn English, they will always suffer the consequences.
My grandfather had a thing for cowboys. It was a treat to hear him singing western songs in broken English while strumming on his guitar. He enlisted in the Calvary during WWI on his way to his citizenship. He never spoke fondly of his native land either.
The other day I got disgusted in I bought a cheap border patrol hat here in California.
I wear it sometimes.
I was at the Apple Store and some non-english-speaking Mexicans walked up to me and A propos of NOTHING AT ALL started saying Si We Puede, trying to start a fight.
They basically feel it’s **their country**.
I don’t mean they love America dearly, what I mean is they see this country in a completely different light.
The notion that they’re going to adopt is wrong.
A lot of these new arrivals feel it’s Mexico North, they feel that strongly and confidently.
a real asset to our country aren’t they ???
dontcha just want lots more like them ???
Also saw this week that our national IQ has dropped 14 points.

Unfortunately that study goes all the way to 2004...
I wonder what the stats are from one decade to the next...
what was it during the 1950/60s when I was in school ???
Quanto ma’s aprendes, ma’s ganas.
I tell Hispanics this every time I meet new ones - EVERY TIME. And emphasize their need. All agree - but I wonder how many do it.
I’m generally against free programs, but I’d support free classes for Hispanics to learn English for a limited course-length.
Sad thing is, I doubt many would take it.
Why not? Because foreign cultures in a nation that doesn’t speak their language ALWAYS congregate mostly with each other as it is too uncomfortable and to much work to do otherwise.
Guess what? Most Americans do the same things in non-English speaking countries.
My son, daughter and I? We want to learn the language in a country we are in to the extent that we do not have a detectable American accent if we are going to be there for some time.......
They drag our country into third world status.
PS: When I’m in Brazil, the Brazillians say, “I know you are Brazillian - but where are you from?” because I learned my Portuguese all over the country and don’t have a regional dialect - like Paulista (Sao Paulo state and area), or Carioca (Rio area).
When speaking Spanish with Hispanics, they used to say, “Are you from Brazil?” - but sadly, the longer I’m away from Brazil the more I’m losing my Portuguese accent and they just comment on how excellent my Spanish is......as long as they don’t talk to me for a long time as they will find my vocabulary limited......
They would give the Queen a run for her money if they HAD to learn English...
but they are not required to any more...
When I became an American citizen in 1975 we had to prove we could speak, read and write in English..
I had an oral test of 20 questions on American history and civics and I had to know the answer, without multiple choice...and without studying the test beforehand...
To my shame, I got one wrong...
There is little seriousness to the requirements for American citizenship these days...
1. Be born here and stay ignorant of the honor of living in America
2. Be nationalize and stay ignorant of the honor of living in America
You post “They come for freedom and become state slaves.”
I don’t know what world you live in but they come here for welfare, free housing, free medical care, free food, special treatment, free housing and all other benefits offered those who like to live in a democratic utopian society. The “codeword” is OPPORTUNITY. The opportunity to live the good life off of the backs of the hard working tax paying citizens of the USA.
Now, explain the “SLAVE’ statement.
In Los Angeles, it is possible to live in many communities that speak Spanish. As long as they don’t have to work, they can survive quite well. And most businesses advertise that they “Habla Espanol” ... ask for a Spanish speaker, and they’ll send one.
My Grandparents were from Hungary. My Grandfather learned how to read and write in English - my Grandmother always had an accent, but spoke English.
To the Permanent Underclass Recruiters:
Mission Accomplished!
The Center for Immigration Studies found that overall immigrants of all nationalities have difficulty with English. The problem is obviously English. This Center must be a government operation. I have studied several languages and had difficulty with all of them. Check out black illiteracy rates in the 1930s when the schools were run by white bigots and today. You will see we are not getting out moneys worth from the Dept of Education. IQ is also a problem.
“...street signs in parts of philly are in English and I think Mandarin?”
We don’t have a Chinese problem. When we start to include it into our bi-lingual mandatory public school educational system we will have to address it then.
English Only needs to become standard policy.
Foreign language media needs to be suppressed, except when it is providing English as a Second Language.
Familias can grow up here without learning Inglés, thanks to televisión y abuela.
“some non-english-speaking Mexicans walked up to me...”
They are like a pack of coyotes...in a pack they are brave...alone they are like little rabbits.
I’ll bet most are even illiterate in Spanish.
