Learning English is a much bigger hurdle for immigrants than earlier believed, with most Hispanics being functional illiterates, even those who have been in the United States for over a decade.
A new analysis of immigrants found that 63 percent of Hispanics have a "below basic" understanding of English, making them illiterate.
And it doesn't get better if they stay in the U.S. for 15 years. In a shocking finding showing that they haven't tried to learn -- or even had to -- more, 67 percent, of Hispanics don't have English proficiency even after 15 years in America.
The Center for Immigration Studies found that overall immigrants of all nationalities have difficulty with English. Some 41 percent score at or below the lowest level of English literacy.

Several years ago I remember a lot of churches having EFL signs out front. There are free aps for your phone to learn languages (I’m studying Spanish and German). In other words, there is no excuse for someone not to learn the primary language where he/she lives.
Ditto my Dad's family...Ireland...Gaelic...yet my Dad's boss,a billionaire, came to my Mom's funeral. And some years later my Dad attended that same billionaire's funeral.
Politically incorrect, I am sure.
My mom’s family from Budapest Hungary. Same here. In fact, my great-grandmother spoke perfect English.
And 60% have psych problems.
Some time ago I read a piece in the Scientific American about the acquisition of language. It basically said that the human brain is designed as a language sponge (my word) and that an intact brain *easily* acquires languages up to a certain point. For some reason I think that point,as specified in the piece, was puberty.
You aren’t given handouts, social services, and ballots in English if you live in any of those countries sourcing these immigrants.
Africa and the Muslim world — dumber that a box of rocks. Even India doesn’t look so good. Centra America and the northern half of South America pretty stupid.
My grandmother and her siblings were first generation born here. Their parents were from Norway. The older generation spoke mostly Norwegian, but g’ma and her siblings were punished for using Norwegian as everyday language. They were expected by the older generation to be American.
My MIL’s family still spoke Swedish at home but, as was explined to me, since they wanted to become Americans, they had to learn English. And that was all the adults, too. And they did. And, oddly enough, not a single one of them was ever on the dole.
Get the he** out of this country if you won’t assimilate and learn the language. Ingrates.
Not to worry.
Our libs are busy making us learn Spanish.
Aided by stores such as Home Depot and Lowes which appear to think that Spanish is our native language.
The globalists are wining. The dumber the public the more money they make off of you. 14% loss of intelligence.

Precisely; why bother to assimilate when Uncle Sugar is passing out food stamps, subsidized (or free) housing, free medical care and a host of other “bennies?” Plus, there’s bi-lingual education for the kids (with emphasis on the “mother tongue,” not English, and assistance for all types of programs and services provided in Spanish and other languages.
Meanwhile, the media offers radio, TV and cable outlets that broadcast in the language of the immigrants. There are more than 40 radio signals in the Los Angeles area and a significant number air programming in Spanish, Korean, Japanese and other foreign languages. And there are plenty of neighborhoods where you’ll never hear a word of English, because there is little incentive for the “new arrivals” (and their kids) to learn the language.
Without acceptance of a larger national culture and language, large sections of the US will go the way of the Balkans. Or, we’ll see the emergence of no-go zones, which already exist (to a certain degree) in many of our largest cities.
A late friend of mine spent part of his Air Force career in Washington, DC, assigned to Bolling AFB. The base was surrounded by some of the worst ghettos in DC; at his newcomer’s orientation, he was told in the event of a breakdown, stay in the car and call 9-11, or if you have a flat, roll on the rim until you reach a safe area. And that was in the late 80s.
Why should they have to learn to write and speak English?
I’ve lived in deep South Texas for 70 years and know the reason why. It’s very simple. THEY DON’T HAVE TO! They don’t want to! They think that they are still in Mexico and have no intention in assimilating into our society. Worse yet, we (as a society) encourage it by printing, speaking, and writing everything in both English and Spanish so they will be accommodated.
Go to Russia and demand that they speak English. Do the same in France, Libya, China........ You will soon find out that other countries don’t cave into political correctness. You live there...you adapt their way of life.
We have planted the seeds of liberalism that have eaten away from the foundation of our culture and now become pawns in political correctness that will certainly be recorded in the annals of history as to the key downfall of the once great America we once knew. We can certainly thank our (so-called) PC and liberal educational system for this travesty.
Immigrant parents who enforce english at home end speaking it well as do their children.
Most don’t do that anymore.
Why should they? Start strongly and loudly objecting to press 2 for Spanish, expense of paying for Spanish stations on cable, interpreters in our courts, and our documents in Spanish and English. Then they will learn.
I guess the ESL stuff is not working as planned.
They need to dump this crap. ENGLISH is our language, learn it or leave.
street signs in parts of philly are in English and I think Mandarin?
