Amazon just bought Whole Foods, my friend texted me seconds after the announcement of the proposed acquisition. Its over. The world.
This unease is widespread, and has raised new calls for breaking up Jeff Bezoss impending monopoly by force. Surely the company, which now generates 30% of all online and offline retail sales growth in the United States, and already controls 40% of internet cloud services, has reached too far. The 3% hike in Amazons share price since the announcementwhich would alone more than pay for the acquisitionmay attest less to the deals appropriateness than to investors growing fear that missing out on Amazon means missing out on the future of the economy.
Whatever you may think of Jeff Bezos, and whether or not antitrust regulations can justifiably be applied to a company whose expansion doesnt raise but actually lowers costs for end consumers, may be beside the point. Many of us get that something is amiss, but are ourselves so deeply enmeshed in the logic of last centurys version of free-market industrial capitalism that we cant quite bring ourselves to call this out for the threat it poses to our markets, our economy, and even our planet.

Same here. I don’t know what I’d do without them. I’m a heavy user of walmart.com and a few other online shopping sites, but amazon is my first go to site, mostly because I have Prime and know I can get what I need quickly.
If you live in a small town as I do, amazon brings the world to you.
Two other things to watch out for: the choices to select for returns are now fewer and do not have any selections for wrong size, mismatched items, and so on. Secondly, the "supplier" now makes the decision on whether returns are acceptable or not. But in all cases customer pays for return shipment - unless the item is described as "Free returns".

‘All I needed to know about Jeff Bezos and amazon: In July 2012, Bezos and his wife personally donated $2.5 million to support a same-sex marriage referendum in Washington, which successfully passed.’
Did you learn something bad or good about Bezos that day?
Very bad. I don’t use amazon.
So you object to Amazon but not to gay marriage?
Both
Wow. Thanks for the tip.
I was WONDERING why sometimes there was a tax and sometimes there wasn’t, an the rates were often different.
I NEVER thought that they were different state tax rates.
Thanks :)
Did I understand right? Am I getting taxed at the rate of other states sometimes?
NYC is 8 percent and I’ve paid 3 percent, 4.5 percent. Doesn’t make sense.
No. You are either getting taxed at your state's rate (if the item is sold by Amazon or the actual seller has a physical presence in your state (unlikely)) or you are not getting taxed at all (if, either the seller is fulfilling the order directly, or Amazon is fulfilling the sale on the seller's behalf).
Generally, the most favorable scenario is, you bought something that Amazon fulfills but some random supplier sells. That way, you get the benefit of Amazon's fulfillment efficiency at the price the supplier sets, but no sales tax, since the seller has no physical presence in your state.
If you buy something sold by Amazon, then you pay tax, since Amazon apparently has agreed (under pressure) to be physically present in all fifty-seven states.
Thanks. But I swear to God sometimes the tax does not figure at 8%. Why would that be? Can I be getting charged at a state or local level? And maybe they’re different?
No! LOL it’s because I use gift cards a lot so the price, the final price is not the original price. LOL. Now I can rest easy. :)
Amazing! Please tell me, if you will, on what basis a hardcore Obama defender would object to gay marriage. (Or, if you prefer, on what basis *you* object. I thought liberals supported gay marriage?)
Your initial premise remains as faulty today as it has always been. I don’t support gay marriage and I am not and I was not an Obama supporter. I am delighted that he is no longer President of the United States.
Between 2008 and 2016, I felt that hard core, true believer birtherism was more of a political help to Obama than a hindrance and I endeavored to demonstrate how that was the case. I never had a problem with using questions about Obama’s birth as a political strategy to goad him and embarrass him, “all’s fair in love, war and politics.”
Any benefit of the doubt you might have had went up in smoke when you sneakily and underhandedly used FR to promote the warped, moonbat-Obot propaganda of Fogbow. Any person can visit Fogbow and see what kind of toxic sewage they’ve posted about JR and FR. No conservative has ever used Fogbow as a reputable source for ANYTHING. It’s nothing more than a hate site, and the object of its hatred is conservatism.
You can dress your past history up in deflection but you can’t change it. All you did for years was defend Obama. It was so obvious that JR himself once asked you what you were doing here. You lied through your teeth and claimed you were supporting Palin. Right. You had spent years supporting everything Palin opposes, but suddenly when your FR acct was on the line, you supported her.
That’s like claiming to be a church-goer while lobbying for the porn industry. Still amazed you got away with it.
But let’s end on an upbeat note. It’s finally OK for you to acknowledge that Obama is a Malignant Narcissist. Here’s the proof. He lied like a rug to Otto Warmbier’s family, claiming his administration had worked on their behalf. Then the North Koreans revealed that the Obama administration never even once *requested* Warmbier’s release. They didn’t even ASK, not even ONCE.
Obama’s ‘strategic cowardice,’ sentenced Warmbier to death. Had he is warned the Norks about harming Warmbier, it would have changed everything. But the self-centered weakling couldn’t bring himself to do it, and Otto died as a result.
If that doesn’t scream Malignant Narcissist to you, then your Obotism is terminal.
I don’t have any interest in discussing Barack Obama. Been there, done that...moved on.
You’re as bad as CNN. No, you never discussed Obama. You blindly, mindlessly, partisanly defended him for many years. You couldn’t grasp the fact that Obama lies incessantly. You couldn’t fathom the Uniparty, or why it was necessary to their existence to prop Obama up. All you had was the conviction that Obama needed a Fogbow-style-defender on FR, and you were that person/Obot.
Naturally you want to dismiss all that now. After self-identifying as a Fogbow-moonbat, the subject is less safe for you. Plus there are the dribs and drabs of truth coming out about your guy. Not even you can defend Obama’s mortifying, abject submissiveness in the face of N. Korea’s torture-killing of an innocent American. You just want it all to go away, so you can go on pretending you were never FR’s premier Obot.
Remember that time you were lying a mile a minute about posting Leftist propaganda on FR? What a spectacle. But that is the modern Left, isn’t it? All lies, all the time.
It’s always fun to read one of your rants! Feel better now? I’m happy to be able to provide that service for you.
I do laugh when I recall how fast, hard and desperately you were lying after you posted propaganda (on FR) from the hating-on-JR site, Fogbow. What a spectacle that was. It’s similar to CNN getting caught red-handed purveying Fake News. Lies on that level never end well...though for a while they may seem to.
