(U.S.) Navy jet shoots down Syrian warplane that attacked US-backed rebels
FOX News ^

A U.S. Navy fighter jet shot down a Syrian government warplane after it attacked Washington-backed fighters near ISIS' de facto capital of Raqqa, the U.S.-led coalition said Sunday.

In a statement, the coalition said its aircraft "conducted a show of force" to turn back an attack by Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad's forces on the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the town of Ja'Din, south of Tabqah.

The coalition confirmed that a U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet shot down a Syrian Su-22 that had dropped bombs near SDF positions. The coalition said the shootdown took place "in accordance with rules of engagement and in collective self-defense of Coalition partnered forces."

You said it first but I think we said about the same thing in a subsequent post so I fully agree with you.

It means that we have set a percident and we had better be prepared to back it up.

“Syria is a sovereign country. We should not be in their airspace shooting down their planes, particularly since we have not declared war on Syria.”

I understand your point, but Syria is a failed state. Given IS, we have every right to do whatever we need to.

“The “US backed rebels” are CIA cutouts for weapons delivery to IS et al.”

Separate issue.

But, are you saying we still support IS under Trump?

It’s a civil war. It’s advisable to stay out of other countries civil wars, but Assad doesn’t own the place. He is not the sovereign ruler of it. If Syrians want to rebel against him, we have as much right as France did when they supported us, to support them.

Now, we’re playing footsie with Russia in Syria. Something of a mutual agreement that we won’t go after their people and they won’t go after our people. As for Assad, he should figured it out. Russia, Iran and Hezbollah aren’t going to prop him up for much longer. There’s a new sheriff in town.

Sick. Our national sickness continues. McMaster and his buddies are still hell bent on going after Assad. Assad is their only goal there. ISIS was our tool and got out of hand, but going after them is only to facilitate the continuing effort to go after Assad.

Another sad day in our history. The neocons won today.

It certainly isn’t “knocking the hell out of ISIS”. This is the second strike on the Syrian government.

“A: Putin will have to do something in response.”

All Putin has to do is say... “Da, prior to the election, Mr. Trump and I spoke at length about us helping him win. We were glad to contribute to his success.”

Then, we’re off to the races.

Isn’t that a Mig 21? I thought the Su-22 was a ground attack type aircraft.

Syria is a failed state

That's Alice in Wonderland reasoning. Syria is a failed state because the Obama administration gave its full effort to orchestrating regime change there.

We keep hearing from everyone in DC "Assad is a bad guy". Huh? Assad was running his country just fine until the US armed and trained rebels.

Agreed. When Assad turns on CNN and sees the witch cackling about “we came, we saw, he died” regarding Libya, how do you think he is going to act when the same people bring their Arab Spring to his doorstep?

How’s that wall coming along? I didn’t vote for McCain last year, but it’s what I’m getting.

I agree, Syria is a sovereign country. If another country flew over our air space and shot down one of our planes, it would be an act of war. Syria is abt the only mid east country where the president has made efforts to protect Christians. Obama may not be in office but it looks like his twisted muslim ISIS sympathy continues. What is wrong with our military leaders ? Enuff already, did we not learn anything from Irag, Libya, Egypt, etc ? We are like a bully run amok. Its true. Sickening

As CIA puppet master it’s been McCain all along running the show over there. He contracted with al Qaeda and ISIS in plain site and still it’s a big nothing burger.

F-22, F-18 or not, I would not want to lock up with a well-trained enemy in a Su-35s.

(of course, I was a Field Artillery officer. My idea of a good patrol was to VERY quietly SLLRP up on the PAVN, shoot all we had, then run like hell back across the Cambodian/RVN border or to a cold LZ)

Well said. Why don’t we let all the (real) JV muzzies kill each other while we focus in messing with the Iranian and DPRK nuc programs?

Syria is a terror sponsoring nation, they have funneled missiles from Iran to fire into Israel, they are at a state of war with Israel still and Daddy Assad helped blow up 250 marines in the Beirut Barracks. Assad is the cause of most of the refugees. Assad allowed Al Qaeda and other militants to attack US and coalition forces in Iraq. Bush thought of going after Assad. People really stick up for this? Amazing.
