Interesting picture. My wife saw a headline earlier today that said a navy ship rammed, yes rammed another ship.

The CO is CDR Bryce Benson who took command 13 May 2017.

He has been CO just over a month.

At 2:00 am however, it's unlikely one of them was the Captain.

I'm an old Army guy who knows nothing about the Navy. However,I'm wondering if there can be any explanation other than negligence for a collision at 0200 (I assume that's local time rather than Zulu)?

The captain is still going to lose his command, and many others will get busted in rank. I don't know how you miss a 740ft cargo ship off your starboard bow. The nav lights would be distinctive and the radar image unmistakable.

I guess it's possible they had some kind of system failure, but in those cases, you just go old school and navigate the old fashioned way.

I can't think of any legit reason so many people and systems could have failed.

Having state of the art navigational equipment is all well and good....
but every so often, you have to look out the window.

What a fail on the Captain’s part, he should automatically be relieved now for the investigation.

The captain is still going to lose his command

Oh yes, without a doubt. He could've been 5000 miles away getting his appendix removed and it's still his fault.

The buck truly stops with the Captain.

SOP in these situations is that as soon as the ship is safe the Captain, XO, and all officers on watch will be relived of duty and removed from the ship. They will be drug tested and interviewed separately, repeatedly. Probably by NCIS and also special accident investigation teams. There will be a formal board of inquiry called at which every single detail of what happened leading up to the collision, during the accident and after will be examined under a microscope. All of the ships logs and standing orders will be examined. The training records of every single sailor on the ship will be gone over with a fine tooth comb. Each sailor will also be interviewed and required to give a written statement about what happened. The senior officers will be advised of their Article 32 rights (the military equivalent to a Miranda warning) and they can retain lawyers or request a military lawyer be assigned by JAG. If the BOI does not completely exonerate everyone on watch at the time (irrespective of whether the CO was on the bridge or not) the Captain will likely be court-martialed. Others may also be court-martialed. And yes, in these situations a lot of careers usually come to an end. The Navy has a long tradition of holding COs as absolutely accountable for whatever happens on or to their ships.

When red on green you see ahead, port your helm and show your red.

Translation for non-shipdrivers:
At night, if you see the port side light of a ship to your starboard, slow or turn your ship to starboard so that you pass safely port to port or the other ship passes ahead of you. It is YOUR duty to maneuver.

At night all ships are required to display navigation lights. These are used to tell other ships about the direction the ship is facing relative to the ship viewing it.

Red, left, and port all have fewer letters than right, green, and starboard.

Full disclosure: It has been 35 years since I last had the deck.

Is the fore port SPY-1D radar array warped?
Does anyone else think this will cost tens of millions to fix?

He has been incapacitated in the accident. The XO is commanding the ship. Incapacitated is the word in the article I just read.
