Thanks to Trump, Germany says it can’t rely on the United States. What does that mean?
Washington Post ^ | May 28, 2017 | Henry Farrell

German Chancellor Angela Merkel told a crowd Sunday in southern Germany that Europe can no longer rely on foreign partners.

Merkel on Sunday declared a new chapter in U.S.-European relations after contentious meetings with President Trump last week, saying that Europe “really must take our fate into our own hands.”

Offering a tough review in the wake of Trump’s trip to visit E.U., NATO and Group of Seven leaders last week, Merkel told a packed Bavarian beer hall rally that the days when Europe could rely on others was “over to a certain extent. This is what I have experienced in the last few days.”

-snip

Now, Merkel is suggesting that the Americans aren’t really in, and, by extension, Germany and Europe are likely to take on a much more substantial and independent role than they have in the past 70 years.

This is thanks to Trump

Merkel’s comment about what she has experienced in the past few days is a clear reference to President Trump’s disastrous European tour. Her belief that the United States is no longer a reliable partner is a direct result of Trump’s words and actions. The keystone of NATO is Article 5, which has typically been read as a commitment that in the event that one member of the alliance is attacked, all other members will come to its aid.

-snip

However, Trump did not express his commitment to Article 5 in his speech to NATO, instead lambasting other NATO members for not spending enough money on their militaries. When Trump went on to the Group of Seven meeting in Italy, he declined to recommit to the Paris agreement on climate change, leaving the other six nations to issue a separate statement.

The article such BS.

It is full of fantasy conjecture and projection of weird hope, with no recognition of what the Germany and France have most desirous of over the last 70 years and particularly since the days of DeGaulle.

Germany and France were the masterminds behind the EU and have consistenly sought to be seen as the leaders.

They have recognized over recent years the EU is dead and now seek independent influence in parts of the world where they are relevant or dependent on resources such as Libya, where France begged the USA to “Lead from Behind” so France could maintain its supply of energy from the Libyans and reduce their dependence on Russia.

Germany has been itching for years to build their own version of NATO and it only takes one google search to see that.

With their participation in immigration of the crazies from North Africa, they will be kept busy with “Social Issue” for a good number of years to come and really won’t be able to support an independent Armed Force and will be forced to pay their fair share for NATO eventually....

Guys, I was just saying that the Washington Post was trying to pin the blame for this on Trump, not on Merkel. I in no way was trying to defend Erkel or her suicidal policy toward the muslime hordes.

Merkel ... saying that Europe "really must take our fate into our own hands."

They already have. Letting in millions of Muslims has pretty much sealed it and not for the better.

We don’t take their phone calls in the future. We don’t come to their rescue. Is she really that dense? That stupid? She’s willing to let the country be destroyed than admit she is wrong?

When you make consistently stupid decisions, Merkel, then your country harvests the results of your stupidity. So be it. There is no free lunch.

You treat most Hondas right and they’ll go for over 200K miles. Ditto for some Toyotas.

Germany shut down the nuclear power plants and expanded burning lignite coal to back up the unstable and overbuilt solar/wind operation.

LOL! Translation: Trump won't subjugate American citizens with the Globull Climate "crisis" and expects us to actually pay our fair share for NATO - how can we trust someone like that?"

Says more about the sick minds of Merkel and the WaaaaaaPo and elevates Trump in rational minds.

Merkel does not want to pay her NATO back fees. She’s a thief. She also does not like being called out on her failed mass Muslim immigration mess.

Germany's efforts to destroy Europe, efforts that began 100+ years ago, clearly continue. There's got to be something in the German psyche, the German "soul",that's basically inconsistent with civilized Western democracy...the system born in Great Britain and then taught to the United States,Canada and Australia.

I think we should have left Germany in ruins in 1945...things couldn't have turned out any worse for Western society than they have.

You have to wonder if on some level, Germany was ok with Brexit. It can now step into that void and take it's place as the leader of Europe.

It would be a big mistake to bash these germans too much, after all they are your original Anglo-Saxon brothers, Trump is one of them.

The last thing one needs is a tribal infighting of like people.
( e.g. the Lions fight while the Hyena gets the meat)

In case the uninformed haven't noticed, the East-West, West-West war is over,
it's now the North-South, a conflict based on sticks and stones, and population over-run, with no sophisticated weapons involved, facilitated by the excessive misplaced emotion of petty towards the weak.
there is a fine line between helping and enabling.

continue that selfish game and get ready for the caves, the Lion will become a Mouse.

Hilarious that Merkel thinks she’s going to have a European superstate. The only way the EU is going to have a common military is if Germany and France pick up the slack. The only thing Merkel cares about spending money on is more rapefugees.

At least we’re not going to have PetroEuros funding Islamofascists to take into consideration. At this point, we ought to move Ramstein to Warsaw and leave Germany to deal with Gazprom on its own.
