Thanks to Trump, Germany says it can’t rely on the United States. What does that mean?

What does that mean? Well for one thing if they really believe it then they should jack up their military spending considerably.
To: lowbridge
It means Merkel that since you invited all those rapeugees into Germany, deal with it.

Saving Europe in two world wars ought to be enough. The Muslims will overrun Germany in 25 years and “Merkel” will be a curse word.

“Theyre one united Europe now. They dont need us, right?”
The old-saw about NATO was that it was intended “to keep the Russians out, the US in & the Germans down.
From a purely US point of view (& before that, Britain’s) it’s not in our strategic interests to have a united Europe. Politics being what they are, sooner or later there will be a clash.

I was born and raised in Germany and spent over 30 years after that in that country working for my company.
The average German always feels superior to those “dumb” Americans and their attitude toward us is unbelievably bad. If we don't agree on every single point, we are ridiculed and shunned. Merkel and her cohorts are very arrogant and do believe that Germany is the true superpower and needs to rule the world. Sort of like Hillary believes that she won. The Election will be won by Merkel, because they really don't have anyone else and the voters will follow her like lemmings. abhorrent!

Good. It’s been 70 years - about time they stood on their own two feet again, and paid for what they use.

As much as I despise the UAW, I've never considered buying anything but American cars. That's exactly why I stopped buying American...hatred for the *leadership* of the UAW (I've always realized that not all members were my enemy).

The average German always feels superior to those dumb Americans and their attitude toward us is unbelievably bad. Yes,I and,I suspect, many other "native born" Americans have understood for years that Europeans in general (IMO it's not just Germans) look down on us with contempt and disdain.

We will always be taken advantage of because of our caring and generous giving. We are paying the largest portion of the UN budget as well as 22% of the NATO Budget. If Merkel is true to her word, what will she do when she declines assistance from Britain and the US, pay ten times as much for their defense rather than the measly 2% that they promised?

Bundeskanzlerin Merkel should check with her economics department before slagging off most of her trading partners:
Since Trump started giving the time of day to many heretofore displaced and ignored citizens, many emboldened individuals are voting with their pocketbooks and wallets. If Americans stop buying German cars, beer, and other goods, I suspect we'll hear a different tune.
Until then, this is all just posturing. Carry on.
