Yesterday, I was half-listening to a 60 Minutes segment on illegal immigration when I heard some official say that the anti-Italian slur “wop” was an acronym for “without papers.” It turns out that it was James Kinney, the mayor of Philadelphia

I’m full Italian - both sides of the family.

Never heard that it meant “without papers” but my parents surely meant it as a pejorative - low class. It wasn’t a compliment.

One other thing...if one appeared in public overly casual or sloppy, the first words out of my parents’ mouth were:

“Dana, you look like you just got off the boat.”

Again, not a compliment.
