Bob Schieffer: Trump ‘actually sounded presidential’ in Saudi speech
The Hill ^ | May 22, 2017 | Joe Concha

Posted on 05/22/2017 7:25:41 AM PDT by billorites

Former CBS News anchor Bob Schieffer on Sunday said President Trump "actually sounded presidential" during his weekend speech to Muslim leaders in Saudi Arabia.

“Today you saw a very different President Trump. He actually sounded presidential,” Schieffer said on CNN’s “Reliable Sources.”

"You may agree or disagree with what he said, but he sounded like a president. He laid out his vision. He called for help for those in the Muslim world. He was a much different kind of presentation.”

The 54-year news veteran said the speech went well “mainly because he stayed on script” and added: “No tweets today, but a dignified speech.”

Schieffer also remarked that Trump “helped himself today” with public perception regarding an ongoing FBI investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

"I think there are very few people would disagree with me when I say he helped himself today because he didn't sound like the guy at the end of the bar popping off," said Schieffer. "He sounded like someone who had actually thought about what he was going to say before he said it.

Host John Berman replied that Schieffer could face backlash for "normalizing the president" with his positive commentary on the speech.

"You know, Bob, though, that there will be people who look at that last comment you made and said your normalizing the president," said Berman. "You're saying because he met this admittedly very low bar for not sounding foolish, in fact, he was in fact presidential. What would you say to criticism like that?”

"Well, I'm not trying to normalize him in any way," Schieffer replied.

"I'm trying to do what reporters do, and that report and try to emphasize what I think was important here."

Most statesmanlike speech to date.
Trump is learning what it means to be and to talk like a president.

Wait. This is satire, right?

Curse you, John Semmens! You got me again!

“I’m trying to do what reporters do”

************

No, he’s opining from his own view point, not reporting.

I’ve been called a never Trumper, because I dare not to slobber about the President like Sean Hannity. But I have to agree, and not reluctantly, with Schieffer and give credit where credit is due. The President did sound and appear Presidential. More of that and less of the childish impulsiveness will go a long way.

"Trump is learning what it means to be and to talk like a president."

Now he has to work on consistency.

CNN shares MSNBC’s megalomaniacal belief that it’s purpose is not reporting news, but shaping public opinion.

Anyone who followed Trump throughout the campaign knew Trump had “presidential” in him. It came out many many times. It’s no surprise to me he could do a speech like the one in SA. On the other hand I hope he never quits tweeting his mind. I’ve always liked the balance.
