(CNN) - A California homeowner exercised his right to bear arms -- and take pictures -- after a group of people tried to break into his home.

Yan Zhang of Chino Hills was at home with his wife and children when five people tried to enter the house through a balcony in the back.

Zhang grabbed his gun, told his wife to hide the kids and then went to work.

“Two of the five suspects were able to flee, but neighbors assisted deputies in locating them, officials said.” (Another report noted that the entire neighborhood helped locate the two who got away.)

“Roberto Alonso Salmon, 18; Garret Rogers, 19; Ruben Medivil, 19; Joaquin Leonardo Salmon Garcia, 20; and a 17-year-old boy were all arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary.”

No, the neighborhood is fine in fact many of those homes are high end homes with killer views etc. And I am confident the suspects likely do not live in that neighborhood. Like CA as a whole, the land or region itself is the crown jewel of the U.S.. It’s the corrupt/inept politicians and the wrong people who usually screw places up.

And what a picture it is: You can stare right down the length of Zhang's handgun and then look at the three would-be burglars, lying almost face-down on the concrete with their hands out where you can see them.

So now, they'll be deported, instead of becoming the dear departed....

Mine show my proficiency at the range. A blank target means nothing.

"I thought it was illegal to fire a warning shot?"

In California it's illegal to have a picture of a gun! This guy is in for big trouble.

I thought it was illegal to fire a warning shot?

Certainly in a populated area. And I would think definitely in Cali. I'm retired LE and we were prohibited from firing a warning shot.

"It's California. EVERYTHING is illegal, except illegal aliens!"

Europe follows four government models:
The British Model where everything is permitted, except that which is prohibited.
The German Model where everything is prohibited, except that which is permitted.
The Italian Model where everything is permitted, including that which is prohibited.
And the Soviet Communist Model, where everything is prohibited, including that which is permitted.

California clearly follows the Communist Model.

Firing a warning shot IS a use of deadly force. This is only legally justified if you fear death or great bodily harm.

How do you convince a jury that you feared death or great bodily harm if you wasted a round and the time it took to fire it instead of directly attempting to stop the attackers?

Further complicating the issue is the state's unConstitutional limit of ten rounds in a magazine. After firing the round in the chamber, that would leave only two rounds a piece for the five attackers. This will be enough some of the time and not enough the rest of the time.

In California you only have the right to defend your home a little bit and probably not nearly as much as the Governor who undoubtedly has multiple armed bodyguards with exemptions from this law.
