The United States will not lift sanctions on Russia until President Vladimir Putin hands Crimea back to Ukraine, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said late Sunday.
During a phone call with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Tillerson said the sanctions—which have crippled Russia’s economy and pushed down the value of the ruble—will “ remain in place until Russia returns control of the Crimean peninsula to Ukraine.”
He also said that Moscow must honor the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine that was outlined in the Minsk agreements, according to a State Department official.

Yes, IMHO that is a good summary of the energy politics and pipeline part of this story. Its interesting they cite the Brookings Institute (a generally progressive/globalist think tank) showing how the Sunni Arabs and Saudis have been supporting ISIS. Its also interesting how these reports have already been removed from the Brookings website!
There’s a strategic interest in this as well. I am sure the US wants a Sunni- Saudi Puppet to take over in Syria, which would make it much easier to control. The Israelis would also welcome that too. That also means poking Russia in the eye and handing a loss to Putin, which has benefits in other efforts to contain and degrade Russia.
I will admit I do not understand all the angles, particularly with regards to Iran.
But we DO know - the terms “Arab Spring,” “overthrowing tyranny” and “chemical weapons” are all bullshit media narratives produced for the credulous.
I have my opinion but the question I guess is do we have a duty or interest in savings eastern Europe from Russia’s clutches. As long as we have a strong President with a big stick, I think Putin won’t dare move on the Ukraine.

They stole Crimea from Ukraine and are supporting insurgents in the eastern part of the country now. Putin is already there amigo.
It is called negotiation. Now the US position is extreme against the Russian desires, they counter it with much more desirable offer. If TRex had given Crimea, Russia would be negotiating about Kiev instead. Just understand that the US is in the hands of Master negotiators, not amateurs under Obama.

That’s an excellent point! But there’s also the insult factor. Suppose Putin and Trump were negotiating a nuclear arms reduction deal. And suppose Putin started out by demanding that the US return Arizona to Mexico. Trump might be so insulted by Putin’s “demand” that he might call the whole thing off.
I’ve seen this occur in real estate negotiations. The buyer’s first offer is so low (or so unrealistic) that the seller gets upset, and refuses to talk any more with that particular buyer.

Insult factor may be an issue within a generic real estate negotiation, but not a factor at all in geo politics of all things. Your potential buyer insults you with a low ball offer in your for-sale house. You tell that buyer to fk off and wait for another buyer may be next day or week. You know a buyer will come, eventually. Not so much when you are dealing with countries, least of it being USA — the super power. You follow the line, regardless of the perception of insult or not.
This admin’s negotiators know what is up. They are negotiating from the position of absolute advantage. No need to give anything away.

Nope, this is a sound move by Trump. We convinced Ukraine to give up its nukes in exchange for our defending its sovereignty. Then Barry let Russia swipe a chunk of it.
Would we support Italy or Germany claiming a chunk of Switzerland because of the language spoken in it?

I I believe the last vote showed 97% of Crimea voted to rejoin ( yes rejoin) Russia to whom they have geographic ethnic and historic ties

Virtually every country in the world has such minority enclaves and I don’t trust those polls. At best we could urge/require a high level of autonomy in distinct regions of a reunited Ukraine. But letting Russia bite off a chunk of Europe like that that we vowed to defend is IMO unacceptable.
Why was it acceptable for Krushchev to give them to Ukraine?
