RNC Chair: Base Will Walk if We Don’t Build Border Wall

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel warned fellow Republicans that voters “are going to hold us accountable” if “we do not keep the campaign promises that were made,” during an interview Wednesday on “The Laura Ingraham Show.”

McDaniel predicted many Americans would be frustrated by the news a downpayment to start construction of the border wall would be dropped from a must-pass spending bill in Congress this week. Noting that building the border wall was “front and center” in Trump’s 2016 campaign, the RNC chair insisted that “our voters are going to expect us to act on it.”

“I know that our voters are going to hold us accountable in 2018 if we do not keep the campaign promises that we made,” McDaniel said. “And so, when you get to Washington, sometimes you forget what was said outside. And it’s important that we bring that back to Washington and let them hear what the voters expect of this government and this president.”

LifeZette editor-in-chief Laura Ingraham referred to reports of GOP leaders “sitting behind closed doors” and laughing at the prospect of building the wall, to which McDaniel warned those lawmakers are “going to lose the trust of our base.”

Walk? O no no.. we will run.. Run against you in each and every district. Voting for those who dared even give mic time to the MCArthur amendment exempting lawmakers from their new deal on healthcare? I know, I know.. he’s a republican from NJ so we must be grateful and bow to his #exemptocrat status.

When Trump won the nomination, it was clear that the “Base” had already left the building.

You miss my point. I'm not refighting the last campaign. The point is, Trump won the nomination by promising quick, painless, easy solutions. He was talking through his hat. So now we have a reality check. Trump is retrenching -- he really has no choice -- but some of his supporters seem intent on regarding every nod to reality as a betrayal.

Trump promised things he couldn't deliver without an Act of Congress, and things for which there is zero chance of getting enough votes in Congress. This is going to lead to enormous frustration among the Trump true believers. They need adjust their expectations.

They have time to correct things but as it stands now I predict they will lose the Congress next election.

That's why the Democrats and GOPe are trying to guarantee that the Wall won't be built

They (Rats, GOPe) the uniparty have gotten Trump to rollover on many of his big campaign promises. Dreamers, refugees, PP, deporting all illegals, Paris Accords, expanding NATO, etc. If they can keep him from building the wall they know his base will stay home in 2018 (and 2020 if he is renominated).

This is my letter to my Rep in Congress. Feel free to copy it to send to your Rep.

“Dear Rep. Walberg

I , and likeminded conservatives expect any budget to include funding for the border WALL!

No amount of excuses or spin from RINO Ryan will do it this time, we are fed up!

No votes without the wall!

Thank you,”

“Your name here”

Seaplaner :" We need a list of wobbly and cowardly and fence-sitting Republicans so we can plan now for the primary election process."

This needs repeating !

You're catching on...

My household is done with voting for politicians who promise one thing during the campaign, and reneging on those promises after being sworn in.

Since when does the RNC have a base?

It’s not just “RINOs” though. A lot of movement conservatives here on FR are saying we don’t need a wall. The new line from some of these types around here is that illegal immigration is not important compared to confronting Iran and North Korea. They are saying the wall can wait and that those demanding a wall are against the troops.

Trump ran on three main issues that set him apart from other Republicans. One he promised a hardline crackdown on illegal immigration and less legal immigration(Cruz, the “trucon” candidate was pro-amnesty and wanted to increase legal immigration when the campaign started). Two, he indicated a less interventionist foreign policy to a rather extreme degree compared to what mainstream conservatives have mostly supported. Three, he supported protectionist economic measures to help American workers. It was people who voted for Trump because of these three breaks with mainstream conservative orthodoxy who gave Trump the winning margin that McCain and Romney didn’t have. Especially in states like MI, WI and PA where protectionist and isolationist sentiment are strong.

If Trump goes back on his campaign positions to embrace orthodox beltway conservatism — soft on immigration, interventionist abroad and continuing the current trade policies, he will be crushed in 2020 in an epic landslide and probably take much of the GOP Congress with him. Younger Americans are giving the GOP and conservatives one last chance to chart a new course away from globalism. If we fail, there is going to be a splintering of the political right in the US like what we see in Europe.

We'll walk away from Republicans who vote against the Wall when the wall comes up for a vote...

AND

... we'll walk away from Republicans who attend the 'White House Correspondents Association' dinner...

I support DTJ all the way.

I WILL go back to the Libertarian Party if the ladies in the house of Representatives and Senate cannot get their heads pulled back out and support their President.

“...orthodox beltway conservatism...”

There is no such animal as “beltway conservatism”...

Inside the beltway, there is only “establishment politicians”...and these are basically UNIPARTY...

There is no “democrat/republican” inside the beltway...They use those terms only for the voters OUTSIDE the elitist beltway...

They laugh at us, the American people, behind closed doors as they do whatever they want as long as it benefits THEM...
