The leader of the Catholic Church went off script to denounce the conditions refugees face after entering Europe. Pope Francis was leading a service in Rome for modern-day Christian martyrs when he made the comparison.
During a service on Tiber Island in central Rome on Saturday, Pope Francis made a comparison between refugee camps and Nazi concentration camps.
Pope Francis recalled meeting a refugee in a camp on the Greek island of Lesbos in 2016.
"I don't know if that man is still in Lesbos or if he has managed to go somewhere else, I don't know if he was able to leave that concentration camp, because many refugee camps are concentration camps due to overcrowding," he said.

Mentioning the Nazis and concentration camps from the Rome center isn’t something I’d have advised as a Catholic advisor to the Pope. While there are indeed numerous examples of Catholic help and support to Jews then, there are also a whole lot of people and other loosely connected groups out there that have a much different opinion about that.
I am not one of those people, but this is a needless comparison, weak willed and pandering at best to a religion that will never accept anything outside its own ideological confines. It doesn’t make sense, and there can be no other purpose in it other than to foment discontent trouble for trouble’s sake. Foolish indeed.
