Russia warns US against ‘Syria-style’ actions in N. Korea

Mike Pence’s statement on the US running out of “strategic patience” towards Pyongyang does not contribute to resolving the crisis, Sergey Lavrov said, voicing hopes there will be no repeat of the US strike on Syria in North Korea.

“I hope that there won’t be any unilateral actions like we recently saw in Syria and that the US will follow the policies Trump repeatedly declared during his election campaign,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, regarding the statement made by US Vice President Mike Pence on Monday during his visit to South Korea.

The world has witnessed the “strength and resolve of [President Trump] in actions taken in Syria and Afghanistan,” according to Pence, who threatened North Korea “not to test” this resolve or “or the strength of the armed forces of the United States.”

The Russian foreign minister warned not to take any military actions and stressed that the “risky nuclear and missile endeavors of Pyongyang” violating UNSC resolutions could not be used as an excuse for violating international law and the UN Charter “in the same fashion” as in Syria.

I would think he has a plan for a transitional government to move to a reunification of Korea.

I had a similar thought. That would be the preferred outcome.

South Korea has many western companies building products for the local economy there.

Expanding that economy to the North and stopping the suffering of the NK people would be wonderful.

Can you imagine the paranoia of Nork top military and advisors. All anyone is thinking is when do I get grabbed and gunned down with a few anti-aircraft rounds.

Should President Trump decide to ‘take out’ Kim and reunite Korea he’d better have a very good plan on what to do about China and Russia too.

According to the Express.co.uk, Putin moved forces to the Russian border with North Korea, they actually have a very small border with them.

The Express is not perfect and is sensational but this sounds like it could be true.

Make of it what one wants.

Can’t see how you could twist it that way.

Just like those unilateral military moves on sovereign counties on the Black Sea like Georgia and Crimea in Ukraine; right Sergey, those kinds of military moves? Oh, and Georgia and Crimea have nuclear weapons and threaten to obliterate mother Russia so you had to take action right?

Didn't have to twist it with my original post as context - I said (paraphrased) that Trump is not Putin's fool and where Bush and Obama both catered to Putin, Trump is putting Putin in the position of having to ask, rather than demand.

You said it smelled fishy that Trump and Putin might not be BFFs and that it could be an act for public consumption.

At any rate - I'd wager a lot of us misinterpret others' comments because so many of us make comments based on what's going on in our fertile minds rather than as an actual response to the gist of the comment we respond to - I'm as guilty as anyone.

Happy FReeping.

China won’t agree to that, and Trump won’t risk confronting the Norks without China on our side. So whatever solution he is looking at now, there will be a country friendly to China on China’s border. Probably just a regime change with the generals in charge. That may someday lead to reunification, but not soon. China does not want a competitor for cheap labor, nor a strong unified Korea under the South’s leadership.

It’s really not of your business Lavrov. Unlike Syria, North Korea is a threat to the US.

That makes perfect sense. Thanks.

Sure, the Russian state organ RT is pushing that, it will soon be in Sputnik International as well. It is already pushed by the Iranians: http://www.presstv.ir/Detail/2017/04/17/518403/Russia-North-Korea-US-Lavrov-nuclear-Homs-Syria-Trump-Pence

However, the qustion is this: Did Stalin Lure the United States into the Korean War? New Evidence on the Origins of the Korean War

https://www.wilsoncenter.org/publication/did-stalin-lure-the-united-states-the-korean-war-new-evidence-the-origins-the-korean-war

If you talk to Chinese officials some have a similar opinion that they were tricked into the Korean War by the Soviet Union.

The question is if this is repeated now?

Consider this (note: it is from Pravda so it might be distorted information):

North Korea says it has only one friend - Russia

Deputy Director of the Department for European Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Korea (the DPRK), Kim Yong Ho, said that the DPRK intends to develop relations with Russia.

“Russia, like our country, remains under the sanctions from the United States and the West. We should develop friendly relations between our countries - this position reflects the interests of the peoples of the two countries,” he said.

According to Kim Yong Ho, North Korea’s late leader Kim Jong Il had visited Russia three times “and achieved great successes in the development of relations between the two countries.” The representative of the North Korean Foreign Ministry is certain that top level meetings and joint documents between the two countries may serve the foundation for the further development of friendly relations. The bilateral relations “develop successfully, despite any obstacles,” he said.

“Should President Trump decide to ‘take out’ Kim and reunite Korea he’d better have a very good plan on what to do about China and Russia too.”

I think he has to have a plan to “take out Kim.” As far as unification of Korea is concerned, we need to leave that alone and let the parties directly involved solve it the way they prefer. I’ve had my fill of “nation building” in far off places about which I really don’t give a $hit. Take away the Nork’s ability to hurt the USA and I’m fine, but I would like to get out from under providing our military to guard South Korea. SK needs to pick up ALL those costs.

Hey Russia. Kim Jong Prefix is a crazy MF making direct threats to use nuclear weapons against us and our allies. What’s your reason for protecting him? Seriously. What do you stand to gain in this world by backing a nuclear nut job brutal dictator running a closed society with 28 state authorized haircuts and a thing for Dennis Rodman?

Putin just trying to be relevant
Doesn't like Trump trying to run things and wants in on the world stage action

Wouldn’t be surprised if Russia simply took Kim out.

THAT would be an interesting move... probably stronger if China took him out but still 'interesting'.

Maybe it would be better if China,Russia and the United States gave the nut an ultimatum.

An offer he can't refuse?

The United Nations is a Petty Dictator Protection Agency... Maybe it's time for something new.

Indeed. 80% of the questions asked at today’s press briefing were regarding NK.
