On Friday Gov. Chris Christie (R) commuted the prison sentence for former Marine Sergeant Hisashi Pompey, arrested six years ago for possessing a legally owned gun that was unregistered in the state of New Jersey. On April 13 Breitbart News reported that Pompey brought his handgun into New Jersey while visiting from Virginia. Following an altercation at a nightclub, one of Pompeys friends retrieved the gun and was arrested. Pompey was also arrested because the gun was not registered in the state of New Jersey.
ABC 7 reported that Pompey did three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan for which he received medals for bravery. He was a military police sergeant who now has a wife and young children at home. Until Christie intervened on Friday, Pompey was preparing to surrender to authorities for what would have been a minimum 36-month sentence for possession of an unregistered firearm.
When news of the commuted sentence reached Pompey, he responded by making sure it was not a joke. Pompey said, Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, this isnt April Fools, right? I dont know how to react. Im grateful, grateful.
Pompeys wife said, I just said, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Its like youve given us our life back.
Christies decision to commute Pompeys sentence does not expunge the arrest from his record, it simply removes the punishment that resulted from the arrest.

Good for Governor Christie. It was the right thing to do.
Back away from the donut.
Why did he not Pardon him?????
We need a full pardon, Governor Christie! Come on!
Why no pardon and why wait so long?
The right thing would have been a full, and complete, pardon. As it is, the conviction still stands, and he's still a felon under NJ law.
It should be a full pardon, not just a commutation.
This Marine has a felony conviction on his record now, which probably precludes him from even legally owning a gun...
Perhaps someone “suggested” Christie do the right thing. At least he heard part of the suggestion.
I agree but let’s just take this as happy news
Reading the joyful words of this hero’s wife really puts real happiness in my heart this Easter weekend
But they never defined "reasonable".The conviction of this Marine is *anything* but reasonable.
All honorably discharged veterans should be allowed to possess fully automatic weapons. The cost of such, and ammo to support, should be tax-deductible.
The day will come....
Doesn’t a governor in New Jersey have the power to PARDON? Much better than a sentence being commuted.
As well as ever pursuing a career in law enforcement since his MOS was military police........
“But they never defined “reasonable”.”
That is how ‘lawmakers’ operate - always ambiguous.
That way they can always get whomever they want and exonerate whomever they want as well, and still operate withing the letter of the law.

Why did it take Christie so long to commute the sentence?
Is there any way to get the arrest removed from the Sergeant’s record?
