Editorial: Why do Kansas lawmakers think guns in hospitals are a good idea?

The state’s senators and representatives have failed to exempt the University of Kansas Health System from a law that will allow concealed weapons to be carried in the state’s public buildings starting in July.

Already, executives are hearing from medical students who say they are hesitant to complete their residency in a place where guns are allowed. Patients say they will go elsewhere for care. Other hospitals, once eager to transfer their charges to the many highly specialized programs in the KU Health System, are warning that such arrangements are likely to slow when guns are permitted.

Why they ask? Uh, because it eliminates another target rich gun free zone. Could it be possible that signs at the entrance reading "Some Visitors May Be Armed" could be a tad better than the commonly seen "No Guns Allowed" door signs? Of course we don't want any rapid melt snowflakes to be worried that a law abiding citizen may do them harm. Well besides the melting part.

Here’s what happened in one gun free hospital

“A gunman entered a Florida hospital and shot and killed a patient and an employee before being arrested July 17, 2016.”

Meanwhile, at another gun free hospital...

“”?Police said Mario Ramirez, 50, showed up at the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center on Thursday and shot Hugo Bustamante and Kelly Hales before turning the gun on himself and pulling the trigger....

The way our constitution works, a more correct question to ask is, “why don’t they think it’s a bad idea?”

In the US, you are free to do absolutely anything you want unless the “people”, through their elected officials, think that freedom is a bad idea. e.g. murder, theft, etc.

To the correct question is, “why should people be prevented from carrying guns in hospitals?”

A nationwide plight on our veterans are the Federally run Burial Grounds.

Here is Florida, north of Tampa, is Florida National Cemetery. Bushnell.
There are no guns allowed signs at the entrance driveway. Absolutely no allowance for those who travel hundreds of miles to a funeral or burial service, with a gun in their vehicle. You are violating their laws even by leaving the gun in the car in the parking lot there.

Time to change that.

My hospital is a gun free zone except for the cops in the hospital. Dependent on where an incident occurs it is at best 5 minutes until they could be there.

You could easily bring in a high powered rifle totally undetected and transform my hospital into a free fire zone for 5 to 10 minutes and depending on the weapon used probably take out the cops.

Rules do not stop bad guys from bringing in weapons. Good guys with good guns stop bad guys.

It's allowed when a lab worker keeps poking my arm "to find my vein!"

Amazingly, they quit sending up techs "still in training" to draw my blood when they only have a few competent to do so.

Also helps when I need a nap but they keep sending people to take my temperature, take my blood pressure or ask if I've eliminated.

Food keeps getting better too!

I work in a hospital that does not allow guns It is frightening that staff have no means of defense if a terrorist, crazy family member gang fight or psychotic patient would attack We all know the bad guys have plenty of fire power it floors me that folks want to disarm the good guys

Many years ago our newborn son was taken hostage at a hospital. He was freed, a little worse for wear, after eighteen extremely intense hours. To this day I stress out in hospitals and avoid them if at all possible. They are very vulnerable to bad guys.

All anyone needs to do is go to any ER in a fair sized city and spend a weekend there. when they see what comes in and what goes on there then they will know why.

Would there be any issues to putting live-stream cameras in publicly funded ERs so that the public can see what happens there? Chicago would be a prime spot for about 10 cameras in a busy ER.

It’s not the guns IN the hospital, it is that many hospitals are in less than savory neighborhoods. It is all about safely getting from your car to the hospital and back.

Who says that good guys follow dumb rules? Concealed means concealed.

These stupid and careless arguments can be applied to any circumstance. On the other hand, if through unsafe handling someone hurts themself or another person, the hospital is the place to be when it happens, eh? < /sarc>

If you “gotta” get shot, outside the ER would maybe be a good place for it to happen. ;-)
