Vanity:Question about the United fiasco
Myself | 4/10/2017 | Myself

My husband is a Gold member on United and is totally disgusted by what they did to that poor man. I thought of a great marketing idea for other airlines. If they offered a comparable status on their airline to fly, my husband would jump at the chance to fly with them. Do you think the other airlines would think of this? I think so many people would switch over to their airline in a heartbeat. Or is this not an option for them?

You have to give United some credit. They united a divide country against them.

LOL very true.

Well, they are “UNITED” airlines...perhaps they can develop a new ad campaign ;)

No, he got his head slammed and was knocked out cold and bleeding profusely, THEN was dragged out unconscious - and the entire situation was instigated by the incompetence of United Airlines, finding they were overbooked AFTER the passengers were checked, boarded and seated on the plane. If you want to argue it’s okay, fine, but at least be straight about what you are arguing about.

The “demand” being portrayed is directly in opposition to United’s company policy. Paying customers are NEVER bumped to make room for flight crews/employees. A friend just got back with me who is a member of a United flight crew. She did not defend the customer being drug off the plane - but she said the story being reported is not correct (unless someone at United messed up BIG time - violating company policy).

Either way - here’s the deal - passengers have to check-in before they board an airplane. United’s system absolutely knows who has and has not shown up and if the plane is over-booked. There is zero excuse for resorting to forcibly removing a passenger who has as much right as ANY passenger who has already been seated to that particular flight.

I hope this fellow hires a great lawyer who digs in to United’s policies - I believe he will find that someone screws up BIG TIME - and he might just end up owning an airline (ok - maybe not that big of a ruling).

You would think it would be more economical to put them on another flight, even if it was a competitor, to get the airport. You mean to tell me there wasn’t another flight going to the same destination within a reasonable period of time?

In any event, they surely knew before the passengers were seated on the plane they were already overbooked. There was no need for this incident to ever materialize on the plane. Can’t imagine how it would have felt to be on that flight after starting out like that.

A friend of mine is a United employee (flight crew). She said that United policy absolutely does NOT allow paying passengers to be bumped for employee/flight crew seats. Period.

So something is quite fishy about the story being put out regarding the reason for the seats being needed. The initial reports were that the flight was over-booked. That is not this passenger’s fault. And while over-booking has become the standard in the industry, some airlines are much worse about it - and in this case, were absolutely wrong in how they handled it.

Great questions - I’ve sat at an airport and heard the please for passengers to give up their seats - beginning with hotel and guaranteed seats on the next morning’s flights... then an increasing “bid” - cash (or more often, vouchers) - sometimes as much as several times the standard cost of said ticket. So yes, it seems it would make more sense for an airline to just pay the price to fly passengers on another airline (whether they be employees or regular paying passengers) - alas, some airlines are run by imbeciles... and United apparently is one of them.

The entire premise of my argument is this: United personnel initiated an “denied boarding” due to the seats being needed by crew on work orders. Per their policy, the passenger was chosen for removal after many pleads for a volunteer. He was told to deplane and he refused. Police had to forcibly remove him [read: police, not United] after he failed to comply.

He would have been compensated with a check (actual money) per DOT rules and flown out on the next available flight.

What am I not being straight about? Specifically please? I’ve been consistent in my entire argument. Isn’t it the liberal argument to pick and choose the rules to abide by and then throw a tantrum when you don’t get your way? That’s the stuff of ingrates and fools, not law-abiding people.

I was already very specific in responding to your specific post. Going all diarrhea of the mouth to cover up what you said and trying to drag me into secondary arguments doesn’t work with me. I don’t play those types of games. You were wrong, and you know it. Now move on.

What are you talking about? Tell me how or where I was wrong? You have nothing, and you know it.

Too much to ask to be specific?

These videos and pics (of his bloodied face, when incoherently re-enters plane) are on EVERY news channel, social media, etc.

This mans bare torso and bloodied face have been seen, now, by millions.

United will pay dearly, for this incredible mishandling of this situation.

Not just for this customer, but for all of the passengers who had to witness this and had to be removed from the aircraft, so that the man’s blood could be cleaned, from the aircraft.

“Fly Delta. We don’t beat our customers.”

That’s laughable because the same airline, Republic, serves Delta.

The airline involved was Republic Airways. They have a CEO who is staying quiet. Republic is not United. Republic has their own management, pilots, flight attendants, gate agents, etc. It’s a regional airline.

“A friend of mine is a United employee (flight crew). She said that United policy absolutely does NOT allow paying passengers to be bumped for employee/flight crew seats. Period.”

That’s because the guy who put the story out is a journalist for the Washington Post. His wife took the videos.

This was NOT United Airlines. It was Republic Airways. Big difference. Different CEO...different management, different employees. They’re not interchangeable. It’s a regional airline that also serves American and Delta.

What do you suppose would have happened if someone had changed his or her mind and decided to take United’s money after they started dragging this guy off?

The involuntary denied boarding passenger will be given a check for three times the amount that he paid and will also be given a confirmed seat on the next flight.

Sure he will.

An algorithm, which United will not disclose.
