Sci-fi racism must end

Veronica Roth, the author of the Divergent series, recently came out with the first novel in an upcoming series called "Carve the Mark".

The novel is about war between special species who are born with special powers. One of the species is coded to be representative of a white elite society while another species is coded as dark skinned, brutal and not civilized.

I do not have an issue with alien species representing races we are already familiar with. Representation is important and rare in science fiction series, so the idea of representation is awesome.

However, my issue lies here: the species coded as white is represented as being more important and more civilized than the nomadic species that has dark skin.

This reveals itself with the “appropriation” argument. You are commanded to wear the clothing and hairstyles, use the language and hold the views they have assigned to your group. In short, their view of morality requires everyone to live out their group’s stereotype.

Sci-fi racism must end

Good luck even finding any real sci-fi anymore. Most of it is now fantasy, sometimes with a thin veneer of pseudo-scientific jargon smeared on. Worrying about the need to end racism/sexism/whateverism in science fiction is like worrying about the urgent need to end bad breath in wooly mammoths.

People like this Miranda are a bright and shiny argument for the return of trade schools focused entirely on learning an employable skill, and the dismantling of our college system which is too prone to takeover by leftard indoctrinators.

Agreed. All leftists should be removed from all education locations across the planet but since we can only control what happens in America; then America will just have to do.

In a couple of generations we will again see bright and truly educated graduates instead of these indoctrinated and brainwashed cupcake toppings.

Gene Roddenberry and his writers were not racists at all. In fact they pioneered the integration of “colored” actors into television as just parts of a normal space exploration crew.

And the Sci-Fi people loved it! That is what makes America so great - we can put all different kinds of people together and come out with great scientists, teachers, military leaders, athletes, business people, a few politicians, actors/actresses, and even conservative black writers.

Roddenberry saw much further into the future of America and the world than did almost any other writer, and made Sci-Fi more than just entertainment. It also made you think.

Yeah....a lot of Sci Fi got into that stuff in the 90s and thereafter. I think a lot of it was the expansion of women writers, frankly.

I started reading it overseas in the early 70s - Heinlein, et al and even though some of it dated back to the 40s and 50s. The stories, plot lines and characters were all excellent. To me that is the test of a good Sci Fi. Can you pull out the story 50 or 100 years later and still read and enjoy it and relate to your own version of scientific reality? It is hard to do that when you have to compete with remembering the craziest of names, places and pre-stories like some of them now. Just an opinion - ain’t worth much.
