Responding to the latest warnings by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions that Department of Justice funds will be withheld from sanctuary cities, Mayor Eric Garcetti said Monday he will fight efforts by the Trump administration to take away federal funding needed for law enforcement in Los Angeles.
Garcetti said that such actions would be unconstitutional, adding that the city’s policies are “designed to keep our residents safe.”
“Slashing funds for first-responders, for our port and airport, for counterterrorism, crime-fighting and community-building serves no one — not this city, not the federal government, not the American people,” he said. “We will fight to protect the safety and dignity of all Angelenos, and we will work closely with our representatives in Congress to make sure that Los Angeles does not go without federal resources that help protect millions of people every day.”
Among the Justice Department grants received by the city of Los Angeles in recent years include $1.8 million from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, which goes to the city’s initiative for reducing criminal gang activity.
The city also was awarded $1 million last year from the Justice Department to be put toward a $69 million program to equip all police officers in the field with body cameras.
It was not immediately clear how much funding could be at risk if Los Angeles were deemed a sanctuary city.
Sessions said local jurisdictions seeking U.S. Department of Justice grants must first demonstrate they are not sanctuary cities, by proving they are in compliance with Section 1373 of U.S. Code Title 8, which requires notification of federal officials about the immigration status of people in local custody. The policy was issued under the Barack Obama administration in 2016.

The Feds control everything, everyday with the threat of taking away funding. IT’s how we’ve gotten into the pickle. One day, somewhere, a city will say “no thank you” to Federal Dollars and that will be the city I retire in.
I do not know how they are getting away with this. AZ got smacked down by the SC for enacting immigration laws because it was ruled a Federal matter. So how can cities/states do this without being in contempt of that same ruling?

The difference is protecting our borders and citizens is one of the few powers explicitly designated to the government in the constitution.

Harboring — Subsection 1324(a)(1)(A)(iii) makes it an offense for any person who — knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that an alien has come to, entered, or remains in the United States in violation of law, conceals harbors, or shields from detection, or attempts to conceal, harbor, or shield from detection, such alien in any place, including any building or any means of transportation.
Penalties — The basic statutory maximum penalty for violating 8 U.S.C. § 1324(a)(1)(i) and (v)(I) (alien smuggling and conspiracy) is a fine under title 18, imprisonment for not more than 10 years, or both. With regard to violations of 8 U.S.C. § 1324(a)(1)(ii)-(iv) and (v)(ii), domestic transportation, harboring, encouraging/inducing, or aiding/abetting, the basic statutory maximum term of imprisonment is 5 years, unless the offense was committed for commercial advantage or private financial gain, in which case the maximum term of imprisonment is 10 years. In addition, significant enhanced penalties are provided for in violations of 8 U.S.C. § 1324(a)(1) involving serious bodily injury or placing life in jeopardy. Moreover, if the violation results in the death of any person, the defendant may be punished by death or by imprisonment for any term of years.
Enhanced penalties are provided for violations involving bringing in criminal aliens, 8 U.S.C. § 1324(a)(2)(B)(i), offenses done for commercial advantage or private financial gain, 8 U.S.C. § 1324(a)(2)(B)(ii), and violations where the alien is not presented to an immigration officer immediately upon arrival.
This law was considered Constitutional in 2006 when it was amended to it’s current form. You can be assured the libs would have screamed bloody murder if they thought it would come to this.
Additionally, it may also be that a lot, if not all, of the money coming in to the city/state is in the form of a grant from the feds. If it is, the grant can be withdrawn at any time.

I have always wondered why the Press never called him on his LIES about where he grew up?? He Claims the Valley, But I happen to know for a FACT that he lived at 139 N Cliffwood in Brentwood since at least 1984. There is even Testimony of his Father “[Crying” on the witness stand about not having enough room for hid kids bicycles in the garage if was required to have it set back from the street like CITY CODE REQUIRES.
He LOST that case 3 times and has NEVER brought his garage in to compliance and has never received a waiver to this day. I happen to know the Homeowners in Brentwood that SUED Gil Garcetti in 1985 for this ZONING VIOLATION.
