Exactly two weeks ago, this author predicted the defeat of the American Health Care Act — and explained that it was a step towards the final, actual deal that will repeal and replace Obamacare.
President Donald Trump faces three irreconcilable factions: the GOP establishment, conservatives, and Democrats. He must bring them together — to “deliver the goods,” a key rule in The Art of the Deal. But first he must show them “the downside” — and convince them they will fail on their own.
The most difficult faction to deal with is the Republican establishment — not because they are politically strong, but because on policy issues like health care, they are convinced that they have all the answers and that Trump just does not understand.
So he let them make the first move — and he exposed two things about them: first, that they had not come up with a plan that was ready for prime time; second, that they had not done any of the political legwork necessary to sell their plan to voters.
Trump gave Speaker Paul Ryan and the House Republican leadership enough rope to hang themselves. Instead of dictating terms to him, they will now depend on him to save them, politically. They must accept whatever plan he will put forward.
But Trump will not make the next move. He will let the conservatives move first. They are the big winners in the first round — much more so than the Democrats, who are enjoying the spectacle of Republican dysfunction but have no role to play yet.

I agree that Democrats have better party discipline, and maybe you’re “Grand Bargain” is a better way of saying it. I think it comes down to how long Obamacare is viable. Right now Trump says it’s going to collapse and Nancy Pelosi thinks it’s the best thing in the history of the world. Both can’t be right.
And it’s not even good insurance.

Thank you for the summary. I have tried about a half dozen times to listen to this guy, but he is so off-putting to me that I end up uttering STFU at the monitor and give him the hook... I hope he is right though.

We’re of the same opinion: upset about the “enthusiastic support”, but optimistically believing it was part of a long game to let Paul Ryan self-destruct and replace him as House Speaker.

The smart money won’t take your bet: President Trump himself said a few weeks ago that HIS schedule for repeal and replace was late 2017, early 2018. It would appear that President Trump was letting Paul Ryan hang himself with the insurance companies’ RyanCare bill they wrote for him to introduce. I don’t believe that President Trump ever had ANY intent of signing RyanCare in the unlikely event it reached his desk. In fact, I WOULD be money that President Trump was surreptitiously working against RyanCare behind the scenes.

I don’t know. It is hard to take him seriously. Although I can follow what he is saying, it is hard to agree that this makes Trump stronger. Will ryan be removed? I don’t know. But even with ryan gone, the courts will stop the Trump wall for any number of reasons. The least of which is the endangered species act. And I don’t like waiting for a terrorist act to advance the cause, I never want to see one in this country again. But I also know it will happen. I fully support Trump, but it is going to take a real majority in congress to get things done. What we have now is no different then if the dems had control, they are the uni-party same as all the repubs. Trump’s victory is an anomily that he, and us, made happen. But it will take more then that. The judiciary has to be brought under control and only the congress can do that. mcconnel and ryan, or the house of representatives and senate as is will never do that. They do not support Trump’s goals. Add the efforts of the deep state and the msm, it all seems insurmountable. However, I will do my part as best I can.

It might not please diehard purists, but I’ve long said this needs to be a matter of evolution. We can’t undo this monster in one go. It’s too crippled.
He is probably right. Ryan needs to go. He is not the right leader for a majority. Not because of just this bill, but we’ve all known that for a long time. It is like the Apprentice. Ryan had his chance and he didn’t get the prize. Simple. He was Trumped
New Hampshire and Virginia are the only states that do not require motor vehicle insurance. In New Hampshire vehicle owners must satisfy a personal responsibility requirement; instead of paying monthly premiums, and prove that they are capable of paying in case of an accident. In Virginia vehicle owners may pay an uninsured motorist fee.
In other words, Ryan lacks the skills to properly lead this House.
Sometimes not making the deal happen is better in the long run.
Obummercare will implode and Trump can use it to rally for more conservatives in the house and Senate in 2018.
Aside from this bill, the hurdles of the Senate will only be surmountable once it becomes abundantly clear that Obamacare is a complete failure. And leaving too much for a Dept Sec. to change is foolish and leaves it wide open for another Obamacare like disaster to be implemented. People do not need to worry about what the government may do to their healthcare every 5 or 10 years. That's an economic instability sitting in place. In that sense, the Freedom Caucus is dead on right. The "screw the poor" (and elderly by extension) approach of the Levin faction will not work either though (Medicaid/Medicare) .
There's too many factors to only allow one side (i. e. The far left as in Obamacare, or the far right - and I mean far right respectfully) The problems not addressed, such as the fact that hospitals are buying the Ibuprofen they use for pennies and charging patients via the Insurance companies $40 for one Ibuprofen tablet is ridiculous and outrageous.
Hospital admin staffs are soaking up too much money and the regulations along with them are driving up health care costs as well. A balanced solution needs to come forward that addresses all aspects of the health industry. It will take the collapse of Obamacare for everyone to realize this. But the far left will never admit it was bad and always look to blame someone else but that's another story
One thing that is being overlooked by everybody is that Ryancare is the insurance companies bill — in many ways it is their bailout.
The insurance companies through Ryan overplayed their hand. Now they have to face the Obamacare implosion/explosion.
In a short amount of time the insurance companies will realize they are the biggest losers as many may go out of business.
As sure as the sun rises in the East, they will be back at the negotiating table begging for scraps just to stay alive.
They had their chance, but they failed due to their greed.
The downside couldn’t be more clear.
