The repulsive worldview of Trump and Bannon, perfectly captured in one poll [WashPost]
washingtonpost ^ | March 17, 2017 | Greg Sargent

A CNN poll out this morning tests one of the fundamental tenets of the Trump and Bannon worldview in a very illuminating way. It finds that large majorities reject the basic idea that undocumented immigrants who have been in this country for a long time — and have not committed serious crimes — should nonetheless be subject to removal.

It’s the latest sign of a larger trend as the narrative of President Trump and his top adviser, Stephen K. Bannon is getting translated into concrete policy.

And Americans are recoiling from the results.

The CNN poll finds that 58 percent of Americans worry that those efforts “will go too far and result in deportation of people who haven’t committed serious crimes.”

60 percent say the government should prioritize legalizing those working here illegally.

Trump has vastly expanded the pool of undocumented immigrants who are now targets, claiming longtime residents and low-level offenders are nothing more than lawbreakers who should be subject to enforcement.

But CNN finds the public broadly rejects this notion.

A Quinnipiac poll finds support for allowing undocumented immigrants to remain is at a new high of 63 percent. Meanwhile, sizable majorities disapprove of Trump’s planned border walls.

In the initial outcry over Trump’s travel ban, Bannon insisted that the “overwhelming majority of Americans” support his “populist nation-state policies,” meaning that a large majority is rooting for Trumpism to succeed. But this is just false.

Now the American electorate are digesting Trump’s budget, which would deeply cut into the State Department budget in ways that weaken America’s constructive international engagement.

It would slash away at the Environmental Protection Agency budget, weakening environmental protections and scrapping Obama policies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions essential to meeting our commitments as part of the Paris climate accord.

Non sequitur. People who are in this country illegally HAVE committed a serious crime.

They didn’t poll ANY Trump voters.

None.

The wall and deportations is why Trump got elected.

Virtually everyone thinks there is massive waste in the DOD.

There is. But there is massive waste across the board in Government period. I’d rather see the $$ go to Defense than to the likes of NPR, the NEA, the EPA, or....the UN!

Republicans exist only to undo the damage done by liberals.

Liberals let armies of ants infest the kitchen and then promptly blame the new tenant for using Raid.

There are NO “law-abiding” illegal aliens.

They MUST be committing other crimes to remain here ILLEGALLY.

Illegal employment.
Illegal benefits.
Fraudulent documents.

ALL illegal aliens ARE subject to removal according to the law.

We should not have to wait until they have harmed or killed someone before they are removed.

We don’t need votes in Congress.
The laws are in place.
What has always been missing is a President who would enforce them.
Since the last amnesty the GOP made sure we could not get one by only nominating amnesty candidates.
Trump changed that.

Every person who Voted this way should be told that someone will be sent out to remove all the Exterior Door Locks from their Homes.

They will also receive a free gift, a giant “Bienvenidos Amigos” Sign that will be placed on their front Lawn.

BTW - Were they asked if they are fine having CRIMINAL Illegal Aliens (like Trump is doing) deported?

We need to vastly open up the application process for immigration and work visas, it should not take years but perhaps a couple of months to vet them.

I couldn't disagree more. How do you properly 'vet' people when you don't even know who they are. You must be willing to put blind faith in every despot run .gov on the planet to even consider it. Nope, we need to sharply curtail all immigration, if not put a complete halt to it for a decade or more. WTP have a mess on our hands and we will not get it cleaned up by making it easier for anyone to come here. There is no longer a benefit to America with this unbridled immigration, legal or illegal.

"We don't need votes in Congress.

You need the money appropriated, so you need the votes.

That's your problem. Enforcement Only is very, very expensive.

Faced with these high costs, you always come up with cock and bull stories about Mexico paying for it or forcing the local taxpayers in sanctuaries to pay for it. If you think a court will force these local taxpayers to pay to enforce federal law, you are fucked up in the head. You are going to need 10-20 thousand more ICE agents and you will have to build more jails, feed them and provide them with lawyers.

If you think you can steal land in Texas to build your fence, you are full of it. Senator Cornyn has already said no.

What are you going to do about visa overstays. How much is your visa tracking system going to cost.

What percent of GDP are you planning on spending?
