There isn't anything illegal, but Exxon was being shaken down by the Obama administration, which they were resisting.
Obama was using the SEC to threaten Exxon, claiming that they were misleading their shareholders by not disclosing internal studies on climate change. Exxon claimed the studies were proprietary, and the Obama SEC was claiming that it was proof of disputing "settled science" or something.
In either case, they were using the shareholders as an excuse to claim malfeasance by Exxon. Now they're trying to make it look like Tillerson was hiding something by not using his corporate email to discuss what Exxon "knew" about climate change.

Who cares how Tillerson did email at Exxon? He could have had his email set up as anything he wants and not violated any laws or gubmint regulations. Pretty much everybody used private email with aliases in the Obamadork admin to avoid using official email systems for official business in violation of all kinds of laws and gubmint regulations. Nobody in the MSM cared a whit or said much about the actual violations by the Obamaroids.
