When a man knows he is to be hanged, said Dr. Samuel Johnson, it concentrates his mind wonderfully. When North Korea on March 6, 2017 simultaneously and successfully fired four missiles, the mind of the president of the U.S. as well as the eyes of the world, began concentrating on the ensuing danger to humanity. That demonstration of power, together with the murder on February 13, 2017 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia of Kim Jong Nam by two women on behalf of the victims half-brother, the dictator Kim Jong-Un, constituted for many a wakeup call and a "game-changer."
Yet it should not have been. The "international community" was given ample notice of the nature of the North Korean regime. In a damning 372-page report on February 17, 2014 by a United Nation committee headed by Michael Kirby, former Australian High Court Justice, the violations of human rights and abuses of the regime were considered to constitute crimes against humanity. North Korea is a totalitarian state, with a single party, a dictator who is the Supreme Leader, and a guiding ideology, seeking to dominate every aspect of the lives of its citizens who are terrorized.
After World War II, the frequent feeble excuse of those who were passive in the face of Nazi atrocities was "If only we had known." There is no excuse possible about the North Korean system. Indeed, the Kirby report indicated that atrocities committed by North Korea (NK) were strikingly similar to those perpetrated by the Nazis during World War II. There is no parallel in the contemporary world.

Look at the bright side: If we have to respond our issues on the peninsula will disappear along with those with Iran.
I’m leaving this one to the cosmos ...

With them offering nuke technology on market expect a blockade.
Get that Star Wars technology set up and blow up those missles when they lob into the sea of Japan before they decide to make a strike at us or Japan. Japan can pay for it.
Awsome was when Reagan punked Russia over the technology alone.
Lord save us from Obamas mess. The world has gone mad.(again)
Incredible isn’t it. I was arguing with a lib yesterday that would not believe that this missle lobbing has been going on for some time. I told him to google it.
Then I sent him this link and he popped his head.

former N. Korea deputy ambassador to London Thae was asked if Kim would destroy a city like Los Angeles, even though he would surely be killed in retaliation.
“Yes, because he knows that if he loses the power then it is his last day”
I think he has put himself in a position to start looking less powerful.
The N Koreans have a choice-overthrow this little freak on their own or suffer even more in future.
An interesting point you raise. Another one.
Everyone is concerned DPRK will invade SK. Huge US expenditures for defense of SK, tripwire status, etc. On the other hand, why would DPRK ever do anything more than posture and threaten to invade SK?
Think about it; what would Kim do with SK if he took it? I have no doubt he could do so unless we were willing to go nuc in the defense. On the DMZ, our platoons are opposed by DPRK battalions and brigades ready to move in 90 seconds. Our defense is based on a plan to move US-based forces to SK in 2 weeks as we bug out south. Now, what relief forces? They are all depleted and our ground forces and air assets to transport them are all tied up in Woggieworld.
And of course with Japan under the DPRK nuc shadow, our use of AFBs there might become “inconvenient” to the Japanese government. In even the best of situations, you do not move the minimally available US forces across the world’s largest ocean to defeat an army 10 times larger that just walked south. The last time I was read in the brief, it was expected DPRK shock armies could take SK in 4 days, even without using Slime.
The huge unanswered question for the DPRK itself in any invasion scenario was always how do you feed, fuel, rearm and resupply even your own armies after the invasion. The DPRK shock armies were expected to “march on their bellies” for 6 days, but where does even the food and POL come from after that time, with supply trains running 300 Km,
But why? What would DPRK gain by taking SK? Kim and his minions have no idea how to run the economy. Business would dry up instantly. Samsung, Hyundai and others, and more importantly their financing, would simply cease to exist. Factories need people, power, transport, raw materials, management and critically, international money to operate. All would be gone instantly. Utilities, transport, economy and comm would all be ruined, and where would replacements come from?
All of a sudden Kim would have another 50,000,000 people to feed, and he can’t even feed his own population how. Any thoughts of international aid, assistance and support is a pipedream, and even if the PRC decided to assist, there is no way they could do so logistically. PRC currently supplies 75% of DPRK trade and that strains current rail, ports, etc. to breaking point. Even if China was considering support, they would be buying into a minimum 5-year megaproblem, and of course, absent the PRC, Kim current plush status is gone.
The real problem is not could Kim win such a war, but really, why would he ever start one?
Who benefits from the current “scare” situation. Kim of course, but who else? Are we spending huge national treasure, simply because Kim, acting as the Mad Dog agent of the PRC if “forcing” us to?
“A multi-pipe puzzler,” as Holmes would say..
As for what to do with S. Korea, even plundering S. Korea alone will give great boost to N. Korean economy, if a good portion of S. Korea's industrial infrastructure remains intact. They can live on it for more than a decade. Surplus population does not have to be fed. They could be used as slaves until they perish. Unless real war breaks out and everything turns into rubble.
The cause of this whole event is simple. Those who can solve the crisis have all petty interests but nobody wants to tackle the mess, especially China. Once some of players find out that stonewalling and blackmail work, they will have less incentive to agree to a negotiated settlement everybody can live with.
Faced with what looks like a stonewall, people tend to twist themselves to find a narrative that can assuage their frustration, which, in this case, is to blame all-mighty military industrial complex. MIC can exploit the situation and make more bucks, but this is not the creation of their own. People want to believe that because, if that is the case, they could solve the problem. If the cause of all this is from our side, then all we have to do is to get rid of them, which we can do. On the other hand, if it originates from the other side, then suddenly we are faced with no palatable options.
This whole thing is the result of rigid leadership, hubris, petty selfishness, complacency, expedience, and stupidity.
Of course, there is always the “tried and true” (?) method of explaining to the DPRK general staff, individually, of course, that we are in the process of choosing the next, SANE leader of the DPRK, and would they like audition for the role, as 2d place is a pine box.
Whereas Trump is generally non-interventionalist, Kim is one person he might make an exception for, if he knew it would be quick.
And who would Kim complain to?
Of course, we could always use the “tried and true” (?) method of explaining to the DPRK General Staff, one by one, of course, that we are auditioning the next SANE leader of NK, and 2d place is a pine box.
Oh, well, it worked in the old days.
PS, re: “This whole thing is the result of rigid leadership, hubris, petty selfishness, complacency, expedience, and stupidity” Did you read “McMaster’s “Dereliction of Duty”?
Sorry for repeats:
Whereas Trump is generally non-interventionalist, Kim is one person he might make an exception for, if he knew it would be quick.
I believe that China is using them as leverage and as a threat that they can claim is none of their business. Could be really dangerous is the NORKs attack us or Japan with a nuke - China won't sit idly by as we flatten the NORKs
Also, chubs is very careful. Notice pix of him out and about. Pix of him monitoring launches, military drills, soccer matches....no one is armed. Not even the regalia surrounding him. He trusts no one. These guyz don't stay in power all these years out of shear luck.
I say this because, it's difficult to get close enough to this lunatic to off’m.
I don't trust that little fat boy in Nork to use reason. You say Un wouldn't know what do with SK. I say he would just move in and take/colonize what was left like all conquerors have done. I also don't think he believes in MAD - he probably has numerous bunkers to survive against retaliation. The boy is insane. My hope is that his top brass would formulate a coup so as not to be left facing the in-coming Trident warheads.
They’re not stupid or crazy. They are responding logically to a stimulus.
The Norks are in dire straights economically. They were clients of the USSR and the PRC, and the taps have pretty much closed.
They have discovered that, if they act ferocious and crazy, we will give them stuff. So they act ferocious and crazy, to the point of launching attacks.
Just so.
