There is a line worth noting in David Brooks's column today: "The Republican plan will fuel cynicism. It's being pushed through in an elitist, anti-democratic, middle of the night rush. It seems purposely designed to fail."
Quietly, the idea that the House bill is designed to fail is percolating around Washington. I've heard it from a half-dozen people now. The law's construction is shoddy. The outreach has been nonexistent. The hypocritical, hyper-accelerated process is baffling. Nothing about it makes sense.
But if you flip the intention if you assume Republican leaders want to see a repeal-and-replace bill die in the Senate so they can say they tried and move on to tax reform all of a sudden, it makes much more sense. It explains why more time wasn't spent getting the bill right. It explains why they're going so fast. It explains why they don't care what the Congressional Budget Office says. It explains why they aren't doing the outreach that would normally buffer them from this backlash.
Why would they want their own bill to fail? Well, consider the predicament they're in. Republicans have spent seven years promising to repeal and replace Obamacare. They won election after election atop that vow. But now that they have the power to make good, they've run into three problems.

Just stupid Ezra.
“Crazy” would be flattery.
Mr. “Third-line-Ryan” is aiming for the top. Ruin Trump, pull some sneaky trick on Pence, Andean-boom...Ryan - the white Obama - is driving the bus.
If they don’t get with the program, MANY will be campaigning to oust them in the mid term elections.

Republicans and Conservatives no longer surprise me with their endless capacity for failure, embarrassment, and self-subjugation.
If it weren't for Donald Trump, the GOP would be a party that controls the Congress, most of the State offices, but takes all orders from the weirdo Democrats.
It's really getting embarrassing. I can't wait for Trump to start campaigning against a lot of these clowns next year.
Phase 1 will end Obamacare. The Senate rules for reconcilation with a Budget require what is being done to enable ending Obamacare with just 51 votes. Any other technique would allow filibusters and require 60 votes. No Democrat will vote for repeal.
Sit tight and let the system work. Educate yourself and you will understand.
That could be. The WP had reports this morning of their “brilliant” plan to leave Obamacare in place if their ObamaCare 2.0 didn’t fly—so they could have it to run against for yet another election cycle.
The GOPe/uniparty is despicable.
This is BS
They’re doing it this way to get thru reconciliation.
Pure and simple.
ObamaCare is effectively dead simply because it has done nothing but drive sick people into private insurance plans and enrolled them in Medicaid. This -- coupled with the other idiotic provisions of the law -- has just caused premiums to rise for everyone else.
Congress is probably figuring that the easiest way to deal with the problem is to have the Secretary of Health & Human Services eliminate the most ineffective and destructive regulations anyway.
He’ll have a hard time running the country hanging from a lamp post.
#repeal today..or #repeal or else.. these people are lunatics. 51 votes and we’re done. Then the market can settle a few months. I think that makes four of us here that see the light.
Actually, it’s just than Ryan is a useful idiot. He’s the democrats’ bitch,
So now, SURPRISE!! Those who lied to us to get elected want to do stuff to insure profits for the insurance companies, keep the money rolling for their corporate sponsors. This time, they even threw in a Nazi clause that would allow employers to have DNA testing for "wellness programs".
It's a win-win for them. If it passes, US citizens bodies are forever slaves to big brother and corporate entities. If it fails, oh well. They'll just move on to.....tax cuts for themselves!
They keep this up, the direction of the nation can't be reversed. We're goin' down. We gave them enough rope with this election. They choose....either use their dominance as a lifeline to save the US. Or use it as a noose to forever destroy the US. It does seem like they chose.
Beyond disgusted, but not surprised.
The effort to dismantle obozocare was the BIGGEST LAND MINE obozo left behind. Had the hildabeast won, the GOP wouldn’t be burdened with that task. But the rest of us would be saddled with the damn thing in perpetuity after it morphed into single payer as it was designed to do. God help the sane Pubbies up there as they attempt to untie this ghastly Gordian Knot.
As planned by obozo, pelosi, et al, anyone attempting to sort out the mess is trapped between the conservatives who will demand a complete free market solution and the voting public who will insist that they not be denied ANY of the UNREALISTIC BS benefits obozo LIED about when it came out. Oh, did I mention that, per the close November POPULAR election tally, about HALF the voters out here are STILL DEMOCRATS who will go apecrap if the Pubbies even hint that they will not get obozo’s promised freebies!
This situation may have some of these guys in DC willing to swap being involved in this thing for the relative pain free joys of a few weeks on the rack!
Nope. Trump is driving the bus. Take it up with him. He is pushing for everyone to get on board and support the bill - which will be known as TrumpCare.
Time to give repeal-only a shot?
The GOP wants Trump to fail
Gives way too much credit to RINO house members.
This is the plan, clearly. Put forth a crap bill and say it's your only chance to do anything with Obamacare so when it fails yhey can say "we tried!", then watch it fail, then use that as an excuse to block, delay, and obfuscate all things Trump (basically adopt the democrat strategy).
No tax cuts, no wall, no nuthin' out of this house and senate. They are as much the enemy of Trump as the dems are. But at least they are revealing their true colors.
upside down thinking ? If i reconcile out the obamascare funding, wouldn’t I have more wiggle room for tax cuts ?
