President Donald Trump's proposed budget guidance is asking for $1.3 billion in funding cuts to the U.S. Coast Guard at a time when the service is doing more than ever, and is already severely under-resourced.

Crabber lives matter !!!
Knowing his appreciation for our military, I will reserve judgement until I hear from him, the rationale
I’ll take any cut, any size, any department.
The reason government never gets smaller is because we have sacred cows.
There isn’t a single government organization that is short-funded. Ever org can cut 30% and still do everything it is supposed to do. It just won’t have the money is wants, but as a taxpayer I want to keep my money.
We have to look at who is pointing this out and what their motivation because the leftist MSM would never write articles about certain branches, particularly those with a military type units, being underfunded. In fact they rejoiced whenever the military wasn’t receiving enough funding.
Exactly right. The question to ask is, what functions are cut. The amount of money is not so relevant.
Could be that some $1B boondoggle was found that was irrelevant to their primary mission.
For example, if I hear of a $1B NASA cut, but the Mudslime outreach is $1B, that is something to be quite happy about.
Every year in business I was asked to grow 10%. My budget in good years grew 3% and in bad years was cut 10%. I don’t believe any government agency could not stand to be cut several times for several years and do more.
The government idea that to do 3% more you have to have a 3% higher budget is crazy. Virtually every successful business does better than that every year.
Like breaking ice channels down in Antarctica for supply ships for international research teams.
Since the budget hasn’t been announced yet, sounds like fake news. If it is real, is $500mm realistic for an icebreaker? Can they renegotiate? Maybe that’s the play.
maybe he’s just cutting the transgenger bathroom onboard costs.
Yep.
‘Bidness Insider’ is not known to be all that Trump-friendly.
Poor choice. USCG is smaller than the NYPD. Compare the territory covered. There has got to be other places that money can be squeezed from.
Only to 'Crabbers'.
How do we know the Coast Guard is not one more bloated government agency? Perhaps they are toooo PC to function within a budget?
How many "official" parties and vacations while claiming "inspections" ... on our tax dollars?
Oh good grief!
Why not?
Certainly don’t need young testosterone laden men in fast patrol craft armed with machine guns patrolling Southeastern Alaska alongside cruise ships running off local boat traffic. I’ve witness this nearly every year since 9/11 and it’s total waste of taxpayer dollars.
SAR, that’s a different story...
Should not the internationalists pay their fair share? Geeze from Catholic Charities to house their illegal invasion, to internationalists getting ice channels broke, 'we the people' are about bone dry.
Dont Stroke out! Buy a bottle of 81 mg aspirin and take one as directed to prevent strokes.
Then, stop reading Junk/fake news like this article.
The Coast Guard is ostensibly a branch of the military services, and as such, has suffered from the funds sequester of recent years. Their mission, unlike that of the Navy, is to patrol the littoral regions for a distance up to the edge of the territorial waters, and to intercept smugglers, rescue stranded boats or victims of maritime disasters, and act as part of the border control, where their function is as vital as that of the ICE, and falls within the jurisdiction of Homeland Security.
Because of budget restrictions, it may be necessary to recast the mission of the Coast Guard, but they are by no means being phased out.
