He’s in charge of chaplain services for a division. He’s not a combat unit commander. He can’t tell them what to worship, he can’t suppress them, he will be required to giving each religion equal funding and opportunity, he will be expected to provide as much variety of worship and religious freedom as possible. I had the misfortune of being assigned to the 9th Inf Div in the late 80's, the Army's "Test Bed" for unconventional equipment, Doctrine, and tactics.

Many a parade I stood listening to those words I would come to despise: "...something that has never been done before...".

In most cases I would have pointed out that "no one has ever done that before" because even the greenest, most addled 2LT could see it was a hair brained idea from the start and would probably cost tons of money and worse, soldier's lives. But, Generals have to make that next star somehow so...

I liked to say that the first person who ever taught a monkey to fuck a football thought it was a great thing, too.
