Also, by the end of the Clinton years, GHWB was still seen as a weak leader due to the tax increase thing, but his image had been somewhat rehabilitated in comparison with Bill Clinton. Open border issues were just beginning to appear on the political radar for most voters - not truly influential in 2000.
I knew what he was, but voted for him in 2000.
I took part in activist protests to support his election following the coup attempt.
I did not vote for him in 2004, after he conclusively proved that he was a globalist who would send our soldiers to die halfway around the world but would not do one thing to protect our own borders.

I could write several paragraphs on why I never supported W (I always thought he was a flaming liberal tbh), but with respect to 9/11 and security, some here may also recall that the Bush administration was totally opposed to arming commercial airline pilots.
