Some officials failed to act until people were scurrying to flea their homes without any notice. They had no time to get anything packed, but did grab their pets…thank God for that, as pets are a vital life force for humanity. Whether they realize it now, they can make a home from scratch with their family, pets, and the kindness of strangers. Praise God for the Red Cross and other charities. We must stress the kindness of strangers in this world of a failing humanity, as those strangers represent the best in us.
Nguyen and his family had spent all Sunday in a daze, discarding by the armload his soaked, muddy possessions, when a helpful volunteer held up a waterlogged, red photo album, as thick as an old phone book. “Do you want it?” volunteer Alan Supan asked. “Toss it,” answered a relative helping Nguyen discard his hopelessly damaged possessions. In this Rock Springs neighborhood of apartments and immigrants along Coyote Creek that flooded knee-deep last Tuesday, people who lost everything were coming to terms with what that really means. “What am I going to do?,” said Nguyen, who is in his 70s. “I have nothing left.”

That reminds me of the story of the kid in Sunday school who hears how Joseph was warned by an angel to take the child and his mother and flee into Egypt, and wonders why he was told to take the flea.

What flood?
I fully understand. In this case though, I knew flooding was highly possible and I live on the East Coast. It just seems the wise thing to do is to get your seriously irreplaceable stuff, like family photo’s out to a friends house who live up the hill.
You have my sympathies about having to leave everything behind. It must be heartbreaking.
But in this particular case, losing the irreplaceable was unnecessary.
Location, Location, Location.
Remember, don’t buy a home in the drainage are below a dam, behind a levee, or in a river flood plane.
Or below sea level as in New Orleans.
The experts might say there is no reason for concern but don’t forget; experts built the Titanic; experts said it was safe for the Space Shuttle Challenger to lift off; and experts said Donald Trump had no path to win the Presidency.
My dogs do that for me....................
It's a pretty bad scenario to have ones house flooded but not be a total loss. You lose everything, don't collect much from insurance (compared to all that's been lost), your insurance goes up, and its value goes down.
I had a cousin that happened to. It doesn't ever get "back to normal".

That jumped out at me, too. I wonder if anyone ever proofreads this stuff anymore. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen errors in major newspapers and web pages.

I agree. I live near the gulf coast and I have things organized in the event of a hurricane evacuation order or a wild fire. My family and animals come first. All my important papers are in an envelope in a safe. That includes vehicle titles, insurance information, home inventories, passports, and other important records. I have external backup drives for my computers that I can just unplug and take with me. I’ve scanned all my family photos and they’re saved on two or more different backups.
When Hurricane Opal came through we had 12 hours notification before the evacuation, so I packed my file cabinets, photo albums, etc. in my RV. One of the main reasons I own an RV is to allow me to take all my animals with me.
Ever thought of moving somewhere else?
I think this is the one where the “engineers” overestimated the amount of water they could safely release via the spillways....
