Tonight, after strolling down the red carpet and preening for the bulb-popping paparazzi, the kings and queens of Hollywood will honor their fans with many tedious televised hours of congratulating and awarding themselves.
As winning actors and actresses grab their Oscars, they will likely take turns upbraiding Mr. Trump as both racist and sexist. Dont dismiss the charges cavalierly, though especially sexism. Remember the Access Hollywood audiotape wherein Trump was heard boasting he had grabbed women where youre not supposed to grab anyone?
Sure, one can hope Trump was just talking like a sexual predator, not actually planning to behave in office the way Arkansas Governor (and then President) Bill Clinton did. The savagely harsh and unforgiving vengeance Hollywood wreaked on Mr. Clinton was breathtaking especially the female stars (spurred on, no doubt, by the highly principled stand taken by the National Organization of Women).
Of course, many folks found the horror and brutality of Hollywoods condemnation so incredibly disturbing that theyve entirely blotted it out of memory.
Lets face it: racism and sexism still exist in America. Even in liberal Hollywood. Or perhaps especially in liberal Hollywood.
Dont take my word for it. If we accept the movie stars at their word, what other conclusion can we draw?
Its pretty undeniable, responded actor Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter, to a BBC interviewer asking whether the film industry is racist. We like to think of ourselves as being a very, very . . . a progressive industry. But we have been lagging behind in all kinds of areas.
Last years Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards the Oscars were boycotted by black director Spike Lee and actors Will and Jada Pinkett Smith in protest over all 20 acting categories in 2016 (and 2015 as well) being devoid of minority nominees. The hash-tag #OscarsSoWhite became . . . well, a thing.
[H]ow is it possible for the second consecutive year all 20 contenders under the acting category are white? Mr. Lee questioned. Forty white actors in two years and no flava at all. We cant act?! WTF!!
The award-winning director made it clear that the problem wasnt merely the Academys lopsidedly male and white voting members. He pointed instead to the executive offices of the Hollywood studios and TV and cable networks, adding we aint in those rooms, and until minorities are, the Oscar nominees will remain lilly white.
Its easier for an African-American to be President of the United States than be president of a Hollywood studio, quipped Lee.
Certainly, minority actors and films are up for Oscars this year and membership in the Academy has been expanded. Yet, whether 2017s awards are the start of a trend or simply a blip to get past the public scrutiny remains to be seen. Moreover, Tinseltowns hierarchy, fingered as the core problem, hasnt been shaken up.
Women, too, remain woefully underrepresented in motion pictures. A comprehensive 2015 report by The Annenberg School at USCs Media, Diversity & Social Change Initiative surveyed the 100 top-earning films each year from 2007 through 2014. The findings were stark: women only comprise 28 percent of speaking roles and a mere 21 percent of lead or co-lead roles. Plus, more than a fourth of female roles involved some nudity, compared to less than 10 percent of male roles.
Worse yet, in the eight years surveyed, women actually lost ground. Female speaking roles fell five percentage points. Behind the camera, women have even fewer opportunities. The study showed only 2 percent of film directors and 11 percent of writers were women.
Dorothy Pomerantz, writing in Forbes, summed it up: Hollywood still doesnt get it. The town still doesnt believe that there is a place for women in film.
I feel lonely on set. And its not just that youre the only woman in the cast. There are very few women on the crew. You hardly ever get to work with a female director, actress Zoe Saldana told Time last month. Youre completely outnumbered. And you take a hit in your paycheck as a woman too.
Compared to men, in most professions, women make 80 cents to the dollar, Oscar-winner Natalie Portman said last month. In Hollywood, we are making 30 cents to the dollar.
The gender pay gap, so often tossed around, is largely erroneous. Its a comparison between the median male income and median female income of hundreds of millions of workers nationwide, without regard to the jobs being done or levels of experience, etc. Conversely, the leading roles in a movie can more fairly be compared one-to-one.
The North Korean hack of Sony Pictures revealed numerous cases where female stars were paid far less than their male counterparts. For instance, in the film No Strings Attached, Ashton Kutcher, Portmans male co-star, received three times greater compensation.Actress Jennifer Lawrences pay for American Hustle was seven percent of the movies profit, while her male co-stars, Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale, earned nine percent.
Theres a much bigger issue at hand [than just money], mega-box-office-star Sandra Bullock responded in Variety. Im glad Hollywood got caught.
In her article for Salon, Katie McDonough concluded, Hollywood is a cesspool of misogyny and racism.
Tonight, as these guardians of social justice prepare to celebrate themselves and scold President Trump, wouldnt it better serve the interests of fairness and equality if actors spoke whatever truth can be mustered directly to the power structure sitting before them in the ballroom?
Squirm, Hollywood. Smile.
Hmm. She has lied and said she could speak 5 languages fluently in the past when it was really only two (the other three she only learned conversational phrases for vacation trips and filming overseas). I wonder If that ratio (if true) is the same with better actresses like Scarlett Johanssen, Angela Jolie, and Jennifer Garner? Bet not...
Those who are up and coming all have empty heads, those who are veterans, the women have hit the wall and are now attention whores the men have lost their balls and all of them pick their personnel favorite and go back to their mansions on the hill far from the commoners. These hypocrites and politicians are one in the same
In George Orwell’s novel “1984”, he describes a ritual that the state used to motivate and control party elites to do its bidding. There was the “two minutes of hate” exercise. A portrait of the state’s enemy was displayed on a screen and the party elite would scream, and throw objects at the screen working themselves into a frenzy and emotional catharsis. Can just imagine that Democratic poodle Colbert priming his vapid bejeweled, coiffured and well dressed assembled deviants with his anti Trump monologue. Then if some wily technician projected an image of Trump on the big screen, Orwell’s two minutes of hate would happen. America is badly divided and not far from overt violence.
And with good reason: everyone fears that a blatant anti-Trump speech will spark a massive backlash by moviegoers that will result in a major "de facto" boycott during the most profitable part of the year for moviegoing, the "blockbuster" season from the beginning of May to Labor Day. I think under pressure from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), AMPAS will "muzzle" everyone on-stage out of this very fear.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to tune in. I have a schedule conflict, cleaning the cat box takes priority.
No one with half a functioning brain will be watching these buffoons!!! The Academy Awards Ceremony is now and has been, Dead-On-Arrival for many years!!!
Looking forward to wealthy, privileged, beautiful Hollywood libs foaming at the mouth over how Donald Trump is ruining their lives. I want to hear woeful, tear-drenched lamentations from everyone on that stage tonight! Bonus points if they drag their soon-to-be-deported Mexican housekeepers with them.
President Trump, "Making Oscars Great Again!"
When will Hollywood finally stop the hateful and discriminatory tradition of bestowing awards based on gender?
Oh the humanity.
Cleaning the cat boxes, though a far more intellectually stimulating activity than watching the Oscars, does not take nearly enough time. I intend to binge-watch the entire season of “Last Man Standing”, just to see how the Tool-Man deals with life in 2017.
Non-event
I hope people bypass this show and all their movies.
Actress Jennifer Lawrences pay for American Hustle was seven percent of the movies profit, while her male co-stars, Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale, earned nine percent.
There is a solution, get a better agent.
“Remember the Access Hollywood audiotape wherein Trump was heard boasting he had grabbed women where youre not supposed to grab anyone?”
I never listened to that tape. Did he brag that he had actually grabbed women, or did he brag that there were women out there willing to be grabbed?
Here is what Trump said
Trump: “Ive gotta use some Tic Tacs, just in case I start kissing her. You know Im automatically attracted to beautiful I just start kissing them. Its like a magnet. Just kiss. I dont even wait. And when youre a star they let you do it. You can do anything.”
Unknown, but apparently Bush: “Whatever you want.”
Trump: “Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything.”
“And the Oscar for Best Treason goes to....”
Why aren’t they calling the Oscar statue sexist because it’s male??
No wonder he was never invited back.
Despite all of the Hollywood lies and anti-America rhetoric, sadly, there are conservatives, even among FReepers, who will watch this garbage. There are FReepers who still support Hollywood by going to their movies and watching their trashy television shows.
It will be the lowest-rated Oscars, ever.
