Senate approves $19.5 billion NASA spending plan
U.S. Senator Bill Nelson ^ | Feb 17, 2017 | U.S. Senator Bill Nelson

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Senate today unanimously approved a one-year spending plan for NASA that, for the first time, explicitly requires the space agency to send humans to Mars in the next quarter-century.

The bill, sponsored by U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), would give the space agency $19.5 billion for the current fiscal year. It would also, among other things, require NASA to establish a human settlement on Mars and continue the commercial space industry’s development of a new American-made rocket to once again send American astronauts to and from the International Space Station without having to rely on Russia.

“This bill marks the beginning of a new era of American spaceflight by explicitly directing NASA to put humans on Mars and helping our commercial space industry continue to grow,” said Nelson, the top Democrat on the Senate Commerce Committee, which oversees NASA.

Humans occupy

Machines merely go places

Either we occupy the high ground, or we submit ourselves to those who do

I don’t think its either/or. I think it’s both. But I think we can go much faster, wider and deeper with machines long before significant human settlements. I am also not convinced just having people there makes that much of a difference from a strategic standpoint. Certainly deep space settlements in this solar system and other star systems will be predominantly machines and not humans.

I dont see the point. Mars is uninhabitable without an appreciable magneto field, which it lacks.

The moon is much closer to continue to foster the advancement of interplanetary sciences, long stuck in the mud due to lack of leadership and vision.

We’ve gone way way way way overboard on machines.

Do we still need them? Sure, but some perspective..., PLEASE!

What do we have to show for it other than pictures and scientific sampling?

We landed on the moon 47 years ago. We haven’t done squat since other than pay for a space station we don’t even claim as our own.

We can’t even get to it on our own.

This is such a major embarrassment.

It looks for all the world like we had a new team of fourth graders take over NASA management every year since 1969.

In today’s economy that should buy 3 engines and one space suit.

19.5 billion recurring expense here, and we can’t afford a 21 billion expense for the wall?

It’s a nice dream, but Democrats will kill all this funding as soon as Trump-Pence leave office. So, they have 12 years to go to Mars, not 25.

Seriously? You believe the moon landings were faked? I KNOW people that copied the communications of the Apollo astronauts while they were en route to the moon.

Think about the experienced staff and associated businesses that were shuttered because of sotoeros pretty much shutting down NASA...and turning it into a muzzie outreach sham...I truly would love just ten minutes alone with that kenyan...it would be worth the charges....

They need to double the money. And that is just a start.

Have they STOPPED the appeal to Muslims that NASA was supposedly engaged in during the years BO had seized power?

“”It would also, among other things, require NASA to establish a human settlement on Mars “”

Will we be able to choose who we want to be sent there - FOREVER? Nelson and all other DEMONCRAPS should head the list.

“”Have they STOPPED the appeal to Muslims that NASA was supposedly engaged in during the years BO had seized power?””

We were ever told what their budget was or what they did with it? I sure don’t recall any details after the original announcement. Another scam!!!

It would also, among other things, require NASA to establish a human settlement on Mars...

"Require"...kind of makes NASA a slush-fund hidey-hole for cash - for a long time to come.
