How long has Havelock had a WalMart?

One of those stores is going in about 2 miles from me. Tearing down a huge, run down liquor store.

We just got an Aldi a couple years ago. I like Alsi and am looking forward to Lidl

I remember at Lindsey AS in Wiesbaden in the early 70s....there was a German discount place downtown called Vertkaufs IIRC.....I always thought it was like a downtown K-mart or something.

I wonder if they still have them?

From what I’ve seen about Whole Foods on South Park, I don’t want any part of them.

The UK grocery giant Tesco broke its teeth in the US market as well, with its Fresh & Easy subsidiary disaster, costing them around £1.35 billion. They also had the idea of a no frills grocery store.

I made a few observations in one of their F&E stores. First of all, they only had the inventory of 2-3 non-chain convenience stores. And it was not particularly good looking. A potato bin with only a dozen low grade potatoes cannot compete. Their packaged goods were not much better.

Second, the US grocery chains are hyper competitive, frequently have “wars” over market share, and have high volume, high quality supply channels. This means rail and truck fleets, inspectors everywhere, a high volume of waste, and advanced computer systems to keep it all humming.

The only other mistake F&E *could* have made, but didn’t, was putting their stores in inner cities. I’m sure their marketing department probably recommended it, because what better place to put a grocery store than in a ‘food desert’?, without considering *why* it is a food desert.

Well, as far as KALE goes - I hope that fad burns out REAL fast; I planted WAY too much of it last season, LOL!

I’ve been to Whole Foods a few times - but I just take advantage of their free samples and graze my way through. ;)

I didn’t know Havelock had one either. Last few times I’d go to Cherry Point to fly overseas, I recall that there was NOTHING there.

It’s been 10 years but used to go through that area a lot on our way down to the coast. We’d cut off 70 onto 101 right there at the base and head Down East to the ferries going over to Cape Lookout.

Per google it’s north of the base entrance on that part of 70’s where there used to be an old motel and some strip centers.

I’m just outside the Richmond, VA city limits in Midlothian. We have been swamped by grocery stores. Seems to be a Lidl’s going up by Chesterfield Towne Center mall, right near the new Aldis and COSTCO, not far from the Fresh Market and Martin’s (former UKROPS). And there’s the new Wegman’s across from WalMart, not too far from the newly super-sized Kroger store. Plus a few others.

Aldi is the walmart killer. Higher quality, cleaner, and cheaper. Only disadvantages are they’re smaller and don’t have the same range of merchandise. They also don’t do mail order. Yet.

Not really. Walmart is giving them a run for their money. You can now get home delivery of groceries for not much or free pickup. It’s cheaper than BezosVille. Plus walmart is offering free 2 day shipping with a $35 purchase, no need to be a member of some “prime” membership.

BezosVille has a distinct advantage for now on the delivery side of things, but it’s not insurmountable. They’ve awoken the Bentonville giant and filled him with a terrible resolve.

Must be your area.

I am in a Chicago suburb, and the “feral” avoid Aldi at all costs. It’s too cheap for them, below their high standards.

Here, the welfare queens all shop at Jewel or Dominicks. I kid you not. Aldi is the store of choice in my town of the working class, you know the folks who can’t load the cart with steaks and pay with the EBT card.

Sometimes we have to go to Jewel Foods because Aldi may not have certain items for recipes, and my wife and I lay a bet as to how long the check-out will take because there is always a good chance the person in front of us will splay out some EBT cards like a poker hand. It’s ridiculous.

And I swear 2/5 times, the person will not speak English, and pretend to not know that booze or toys or smokes cannot be used with their card, so a manager will have to get involved OR they won’t have enough money on their poker hand of cards to pay the bill.

I never have that problem at Aldi. Nice and cheap, and it’s cash or credit only. No coupons either.

Not really. Usually the national brands re-packaged in a generic box. Very good quality for the most part.

If you ever want to see the sterotypical angry German frumpy frau go to Lidl. They have the most unhappy and angry checkers I have ever dealt with. If you don’t move your groceries fast enough they will just throw them right on the floor. Maybe the US based store will have people to bag for the US customers who are use to having groceries bagged for them.
