The Trump administration has the visa program for skilled workers in its crosshairs

****************************************************************

WASHINGTON—Silicon Valley technology firms, worried about their ability to bring foreign workers to the U.S. under President Donald Trump, are distancing themselves from Indian outsourcing firms, which are heavy users of the same visa program that U.S. tech firms rely on.

Big IT companies bring in Indian consultants on the cheap. This will make IT cost more in the US but it will also have more real wage jobs in the US for projects that have to be handled by local IT people.

Once we start relying on a significant number of foreign workers with degrees because we don’t have enough talent, schools own the area of these employees should;d step up with programs and increase in enrollment in those areas.

They are doing so...........by importing foreign students
(Google "F1 OPT")

That is partly true. But a lot of the work has to be done local to the US. Kind of like what Disney did with their IT staff. They made them train their indian replacements and then fired them all. That will stop with the H1B visas get stopped.

Why bring them here? Just ship the work overseas.

It’s not a joke, they really ARE bringing in foreign students for this.

The H1B abuses are a drop in the bucket compared to that F1 program IMHO. The universities practically get to issue the visa. And they have a vested interest in the tuition check.

I consult to many large IT shops. Repeatedly I have seen the same situation. The project has the budget but just cannot find enough Americans to staff up.

It has choices.
-Kill the project
-Off shore the project
-Hire a mix of Americans and immigrants (of whatever status)
s
With the first 2 options I do not have a job. With the 3rd option I do have a job. Thus I have worked beside many immigrants (of whatever status).

The IT job market (and probably others) have some dysfunctional parts.

I get 50+ emails from recruiters every day. Only 1 of those recruiters is an natural born American. Many are located offshore recruiting. I received 2 today recruiting for the same state government job in my current building. Recruiters are low paid, less English, less competent than the people they recruit. This benefits those who do not speak American English.

Most state government contracts require contractors to be in the US and not offshore. That is not enforced. Where do you think that Election Software was developed that your Republican election official contracted for? Nobody wants to admit this is enforce the law in Republican states, let alone Democrat states.

You are welcome to contribute to this list. It could be very long. Blame our education system. Blame Diversity programs. There are plenty of dysfunctional pieces.

So either let them bring H-1Bs and not hire U.S. resources for the job or send the work offshore and not hire U.S. resources for the job. Either way U.S. workers lose.

But isn't the issue really about prevailing wage?

Isn't the H-1B worker supposed to be paid the prevailing wage, with the understanding that a skilled citizen could not first be found?

My college seems to have a connection with China....

Hmmmm....

It's a state college on the high plains halfway between KC and Denver.

Just to be fair: some “curry eaters” are much better than others.

The H1B program was, if memory serves, originally intended to address the kind of conundrum that made it impossible to hire Werner Von Braun, the rocket scientist from Germany. It was for exceptional people. It’s been abused to embrace people who are low skill cogs in machines, through a game of nodding and winking.

I’m in an interesting situation. I (a paleface American) was working for a certain H1B-heavy contracting firm for about 2.5 years and I was getting along fine with the Indians, and satisfactorily with the client. However I fell upon a period of prolonged illness, and my boss, an exceptional Indian with great honor and integrity, was being lenient about the time off required, until the client ran into a project pinch. So in utter innocence he contacted the company’s HR lady, who wasn’t even an Indian. It wasn’t but a little over a week that she came up with some procedural excuse to kick me out.

Well what shall I say. They essentially defamed me to the client, making statements that hid their bungle/scheme. Yes, after consulting legal counsel, I’ve taken a step of asking for a rehire. I and my boss were tight prior to this. He even hinted several days ago that another position on another project might be available.

I’m waiting to see what happens. I tend to be a very forgiving person where possible. And since I actually shared Jesus with this boss (who was a Hindu) I sure don’t want to put him through a trial any worse than this has already placed across his path. Blame may start being batted back and forth between HR and him.

But my temptation, I confess, if the situation blows up worse in spite of my overtures, is to ask the attorney I consulted with to go ahead and start the contingency fee lawsuit. I am no fan of “jackpot justice” but sometimes someone really does need to be slapped. I confided in my past boss already that it looked like that company needs to fix its policies and practices to meet USA legal expectations. And the fox guarding the henhouse isn’t going to do that; it would have to be her boss.

I have an odd sense that this situation put my past boss on the outs with them too, and they’re just waiting for some feeble excuse to give him the pink slip. Even though, among Indians, he appears to have displayed great integrity and honor. If that happens, I think I would scorch earth. He didn’t deserve that.

Well this is the musings of a high tech redneck in Omaha about the situation. In the longer term, maybe lower skill visa workers like that company brought will be an endangered species. I met some that were decent folks with a high reliability work product, but few with an imagination level at that of “palefaces.” It seemed almost like some kind of intimidation factor was running amok among them. As I opined in an earlier vanity, I wonder if the fear of washing out and having to go back to India is taking a toll among them. Disgruntled of India might not show it like disgruntled of America. The latter might pull destructive pranks; the former might just make a lot of mistakes and not care.

They are already doing that to the degree that they can. For the work that can't be off-shored they in-shore the workers. Easy fix: Mandate a minimum wage for H-1B workers. Double the prevailing wage in the industry should work.

H-1B program is modern day slavery for the brown people.

It is evil and should be eliminated.

All our “Just Laws” have to promote “public virtue”-—and this certainly is a program to force slaves for the CEOs. They refuse to pay the proper amount for the work. If the pay is “right”, they would never have trouble finding any people to fill the position, people who graduate from our tech schools are having trouble finding jobs. It is a crime since the “system” has put them into tremendous debt so they can’t even afford to have a family until they are 40 (the Slave-Malthusian plan is working).

>> The Trump administration has the visa program for skilled workers in its crosshairs

BS. He stated the opposite during the campaign.

The BS part is that the program is supposed to be for skilled workers but is not in actuality. Trump reiterated his desitr to fix this.

I’ve got no problem with that - but if you are going to hire someone to work in this country they should be citizens or legal residents. Importing slave labor to do our work just doesn’t seem to work out very well for us as a nation. See: cotton picking and reparations.
