Not So Fast, UN: The US Owes No 'Reparations' to Blacks
American Thinker ^ | February 9, 2017 | George De Vries III

A September 2016 United Nations panel in Geneva decided the U.S. owed blacks reparations for a history of ‘racial terror.’

Ishaan Tharoor of the Washington Post notes:

In particular, the legacy of colonial history, enslavement, racial subordination and segregation, racial terrorism and racial inequality in the United States remains a serious challenge as there has been no real commitment to reparations and to truth and reconciliation for people of African descent. Contemporary police killings and the trauma that they create are reminiscent of the past racial terror of lynching.

This UN action, of course, was followed by last December’s resolution against Israeli settlements. Interestingly, in the same December time period, the UN could not bring itself to impose sanctions and an arms embargo on a South Sudan that is plunged into ethnic conflict in which thousands have already been killed. It seems the newer, anti-colonial, anti-West members suffer from a case of moral schizophrenia.

A thumbnail review of the real history of slavery is in order here. First, to be clear, there is no doubt many injustices and human tragedies have occurred throughout our history because of slavery; but that is true everywhere slavery has occurred. For a real accounting, thousands of slavery-related transactions that open the curtains on the history of slaves and the slave trade have been recorded and are available on a CDROM prepared by Harvard University. Two other worthy sources include Hugh Thomas’ The Slave Trade and Robin Blackburn’s The Making of New World Slavery.

A fairly good overview for a shot article.

The Aztecs and other American Indians kept slaves as well.

The Aztecs ate those who were surplus or problems, from the contemporary account (the only one we have) by Bernal Diaz in The Discovery and Conquest of Mexico.

Was there ever any civilization who did not keep slaves?

We have slavery today, except that it is not legal. We call it “human trafficking.” Politicians who encourage illegal aliens to come into the country are, in fact, supporting the illegal slave trade.

Technically illegal, but politically encouraged by the same party that supported legal slavery—has the Democrat party *ever* changed?

I still don’t understand why the Hispanics get a free pass from the so called U.N. after what they did to the indigenous people in Mehico, Central and South America. The Spaniards “discovered”, “conquered” and murdered them. We’re never reminded about that. The U.N. has got to go. That joint is a cesspool of America-hating rats.

Get the US out of the UN and the UN out of the US!

The USA has put up with the UN for far too long. It is a monumental failure. Long past time to abort it!

There is quite a bit of outright chattel slavery practiced in Africa and Arab countries today.

In the Sudan and in ISIS controlled areas there are real slave markets where people are bought and sold.

This is silly. Most white Americans were not here before 1865. And almost none were slave owners. Most “black” people have white DNA. And one question nobody asked, if someone was a slave in Africa were you better off when you arrived in America even as a slave?

I deserve reparations for the job I didn’t get which went to America’s first victim group.

The Spaniards “discovered”, “conquered” and murdered them.

I do not think you need the quotes on discovered or conquered. They clearly did both. As for “murdered”, I am sure quite a bit of that happened. But for context, I suggest you read “The Discovery and Conquest of Mexico” by Bernal Diaz. It is the only first person account we have of the Conquest. There are, I recall, 5 letters to the Emperor of Spain from Cortez, but they are kind of special pleading, so to speak.

https://www.foreignaffairs.com/reviews/capsule-review/1996-11-01/discovery-and-conquest-mexico-1517-1521

There is one other contemporary partial account, with much less detail, it mostly agrees with Diaz’ book.

The Aztecs and the neighbors were awash with human sacrifice and cannibalism. Their replacement by the Spanish was definitely a step up.

The real problem were the diseases brought over by the Spanish and other Europeans. Those diseases killed off many millions.

But you cannot blame the Europeans for that, any more than you can blame the Black Death on the Arabs.

If any group owes “reparations,” it’s the Democrats who bought, sold, and kept slaves. The people who fought a war to keep blacks in bondage. And after they lost the war, created the enforcer of the Democrats, the KKK. The people who fostered and furthered Jim Crow. The same Democrats who were brought kicking and screaming into the age of voting rights for everyone. The same Democrats who still govern big cities with all it’s crime, killings, and inner city squalorin their ghettoes. Yes, those people.

If we owe reparations to the blacks, I would hate to see what we would owe to the Native Americans!!!

I have heard about that slavery my whole life. I remember hearing warnings as a teenager back in the 1970s that I should never travel to certain countries, where they kidnap young Western girls for the slave trade.

The slave trade in this country operates under the radar. It is perpetrated by the coyotes who get slaves by promising ultra poor people that they will bring them to a “rich country” where they will have a job and live a life of luxury. The reality, once these people fall for the bait, is that they are delivered into sweat shops or prostitution rings. This happens world wide.

As a government employee, I have to take training on recognizing signs of human trafficking every couple of years or so. It seems ludicrous to me that I have to learn to recognize signs of human trafficking when I do not ever frequent the kinds of places where they utilize slaves. Yet the same politicians who require us to take that training also do everything they can to abet the slave trade. The situation is so schizophrenic!

Excellent observations! Also, what about all the other countries that imported black slaves at the same time the colonies did, Brazil for example. As I recall 10 to 20% of the black slaves came to colonial American, the rest to the west Indies, Brazil, etc.

The total revenue from all individual income tax returns in the USA for fiscal year 2013 was $ 1,316.4 Billion. You showed $ 949 billion in Welfare Payments...

Heck that leaves about $360 Billion for defense, running the government, and interest on the $20 Trillion in debt...
