Philadelphia mayor blames retailers, not new tax, for increased soda prices

Despite backing what became one of the nation’s first successful soda taxes, Mayor Jim Kenney is now blaming businesses for the resulting spike in the cost of sugary beverages.

“They’re gouging their own customers,” he said of retailers who have been passing along some of the costs associated with the new tax.

Liberals. Even when it's obviously their fault, it's never their fault.

Couldn’t see that one coming...

Are the Philly cops going to choke black men to death for selling soda “loosies” on streets corners?

Because, eventually, that is what this will come down to...

I thought the idea was to impose the tax to make "sugary" drinks so expensive that the welfare parasites that the "progressives" are trying to protect don't buy them.

Of course the real purpose is to fund higher pay and pensions for thousands and thousands of "public servants".

A golden opportunity to perhaps, maybe, possibly, teach a lesson about liberal do-gooders. Oh sure, they mean well. But they can never ever be blamed for the results. They can be told in advance exactly what the results will be. But they can’t be held responsible for not listening.

Then, they have to find and identify someone else to blame. Always, it’s somebody else doin’ this to ya. And then they have to have a press conference about blaming that somebody else so that nobody will question brilliant policy.

Somebody could teach and somebodies could learn a thing or two from this, but I tend doubt either of those will take place.

As author and radio talk show host Dennis Prager once remarked, being liberal means never having to say you’re sorry. When their policies screw up, they just put the blame on someone or something else.

The problem isn't that they are passing on the price. The problem is that they are telling why the price is going up. The stores are the ones who are supposed to take the blame for a price increase, not the government for a tax increase.

It's like the Gore tax on phone bills. For a while the phone company had it as a separate line item on the bill, then the FCC "corrected" them and it got rolled into the base rate of the bill.

Probably not; they will, however probably confiscate cars from the suburbs with more than one unopened bottle of soda in the passenger compartment or trunk.

"1.5 cents an ounce tax"

So am I understanding this right? Would a 67.6-ounce bottle of 59¢ store brand soda cost over $1.50 under this? That is insane.

Forget the drama about soda or cigarettes being unhealthy.

Its all a smokescreen to use taxes on those products to bring in more revenue.

Politicians playing a game to suck money out of peoples pockets.

Complete and total idiot who is so obviously liberal agenda driven.

The people most hurt by this “tax” are the inner city elderly who can’t drive & those in lower income families who don’t own cars. The rest are just driving over the city lines and buying their sodas in the suburbs.

Funny you never ever hear them talk about increasing taxes on beer. I guess then they would have a revolt on their hands.
