The Environmental Protection Agency announced Friday it will not repay claims totaling more than $1.2 billion for economic damages from a mine waste spill the agency accidentally triggered in Colorado, saying the law prohibits it.
The EPA said the claims could be refiled in federal court, or Congress could authorize payments.
But attorneys for the EPA and the Justice Department concluded the EPA is barred from paying the claims because of sovereign immunity, which prohibits most lawsuits against the government.

bttt
see this is why the bureaucratic layer of govt needs to be bitch slapped until dead.
Well, ...... they can’t pay, so, ........ All money stops to the agency members and department projects.
That includes all paychecks, benefits, and supply of equipment for EPA operations.
Resume , after the payment has been equivocated.
The EPA has to go. Resumption means more trouble.
The solution is simple. Just make the EPA leadership pay instead of the taxpayers. We’ve already paid enough.
Exactly right. Both are un-American abominations.
Liquidate the EPA and LIQUEFY the ones responsible for the spill.
Can we at least see the idiots who had anything at all to do with this sentenced to prison for life?
After a fair trial of course!
When the EPA was created, I screamed loud and long that, like Obamacare, the fraud that they 'sold' us was not the scam that was delivered.
“Its called the federal torts claims act, and the EPA can be sued.”
Thank you for filling in the blanks in my post, good sir.
The ceremony closing down the EPA should be done at a picturesque location where the spill occurred. Put native Americans in traditional garb behind the Prez. along with some farmer Jones-types. The President would look good in African garb for the occasion. Don’t know why.
Did you enjoy all the pretty trees you are trying to distract us with?
You really think most of us are stupid?
The forest you failed to see is...
Why should the U.S. taxpayer cover the enormous cost of fixing the disaster resulting from criminal negligence, incompetence, indifference, arrogance, or a lethal combination of all of the above?
It ignores getting rid of the incompetent from top to bottom.
What is the existing EPA budget?
How many EPA employees got bonuses? Who, when, how much? Who "approved" them?
How much jail time is being proposed?
BP was fined 18.7B for the gulf spill and 2 executives faced 110 years for felony manslaughter and another year for violating the clean water act
The Lord loves a hangin'. 😀
“Fine, just adjust salary of the bastards that authorized this to $1.00 per day, and get some pittance of justice.”
Or seize every asset of the EPA down to chairs and desks.
Put the people in charge of the fiasco up for personal liability.
Pretty simple. Just start at the top and seize every single thing that the EPA employees own and go all the way to the bottom of the employee list if necessary.
Make each and every one live the rest of their days in a homeless shelter without even the ability to own the shirt on their backs.
If it kept some child from getting even the tiniest scratch on their knee, it would be worth it. (^;
At the end of the day, it always comes from us, doesn’t it? But they did pay. Something like $3million.
But I don’t know exactly what account the check was written from. I’d think it’s probably from some fund the DOJ has somewhere for such things.
Shut it down and save billions.
