Virginia man spends $1,000 to deliver 300,000 pennies to Lebanon DMV
Bristol Herald Courier ^ | Jan 11, 2017 | Reece Ristau

The 300,000 pennies the Cedar Bluff, Virginia man took to the DMV Wednesday morning to pay sales tax on two new cars weighed in at 1,600 pounds. A mature Holstein cow weighs about 1,500 pounds.

See, Stafford had a bone to pick with the DMV. It wasn’t about agonizingly long lines or a bad picture on his driver’s license: It came down to 10 phone numbers.

And Stafford ended up filing three lawsuits and spending at least $1,005 to give the DMV his 2 cents.

One might feel bad for the Lebanon DMV employees, who chose to count the coins by hand. But Stafford is within his legal right. According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, "United States coins and currency are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes and dues” under the Coinage Act of 1965.

However, private businesses, individuals or organizations do not have to accept coins as payment.

Sounds to me like he got bent out of shape over nothing.

Disagree. Maybe he will get someone’s attention now. Squeaky wheel.

Sure you like it.

But would you spend a thousand bucks to make this point?

He should be telling them the one that he wants to use.

I’ve spent more than that to make other points. Nothing like burning someone or an organization that thinks they are invulnerable. If you doubt that, I’ll pass along the name of a lawyer I put into bankruptcy.

Who paid for wheelbarrows? Good question. I was wondering the same.

My guess. The gentleman was angry and wanted someone at the DMV to suffer. Then he had fun calculating the delivery of $1K in pennies. And then he executed his plan and celebrated.

Problem. There are better things to calculate, such as credit scores.

Never understood the logic of this. If I were the DMV I would make him stand there until it was fully counted before issuing a receipt. And I would count slow and wrap them.

>>>I use an “actual street address” for my car registration. Just happens that the street address is a UPS Store in town.

Is that also where you are registered to vote?

My voter registration card lists the UPS Store as my address.

Thinking about this, the only thing that has my home address on it is my driver's license.

___

Exactly and if you want to use a PO box you use the streetable address or put a partial street on the first line and your po box on the second. This guy could have picked any address he has that he wants mail to go to. You don’t need to ask for permission. But he decided to act like a bafoon.

So it’s quite possible that you are committing voter fraud. You may be voting in a precinct in which you do not reside.

Except the USPS won’t let the UPS Store use “PO Box” in your address. I use PMB, for Private Mail Box, instead.

I try and stick the PMB at the end of the street address:
123 Maple Ave PMB007
