If colleges keep killing academic freedom, civilization will die, too
The Washington Post ^ | January 10, 2017 | José A. Cabranes

Sixty years ago, Chief Justice Earl Warren warned our nation that we had a choice. Either “teachers and students must always remain free to inquire, to study and to evaluate,” or “our civilization will stagnate and die.” There was no third option.

Today, we face this choice again. Recent attempts to shame professors for unpopular views and to curtail the due process rights of those accused of misconduct are cause for alarm. Especially when academic freedom is endangered at places such as Yale — long celebrated as a leader on freedom of expression — we know that the erosion of academic freedom has become a national problem.

Very, very true. The PC Thought Police are a threat to academic freedom and free thought.

Our colleges and universities are too far gone. Much like our media and most of the politicians in power.

If 75 percent of our institutes of higher learning were to be nuked from orbit- that would be a good start.

Tenure was supposed to create an atmosphere of open debate and inquiry, but instead has created havens for talentless cowards who want to be insulated from life. Rather than fostering a climate of open inquiry, college campuses have become fascist colonies of anti-American hate speech, hypersensitivity, speech codes, banned words and prohibited scientific inquiry.

Even liberals don’t try to defend Ward Churchill on grounds that he is Galileo pursuing an abstract search for the truth. They simply invoke “free speech,” like a deus ex machina to end all discussion. Like the words “diverse” and “tolerance,” “free speech” means nothing but: “Shut up, we win.” It’s free speech (for liberals), diversity (of liberals) and tolerance (toward liberals).

The clear alternative is those who love God, freedom, and limited government begin taking the reins of education at all levels. This is an Anti-Establishment Movement and Revolution that is just getting started. So Gentlemen, start your engines.

Perhaps one good back door approach is to force the colleges to refund students who do not secure positions related to their (sometimes laughable) field of studies within a year or two of graduation.

We can see how long the clownish “studies” and many English/History/Sociology Departments last.

Academic Freedom is an illusion. Academia is now the whore servant of the globalist elite agenda. This has been building since the early thirties of last century as an alternate economic system by which the elite will rule the world ... Technocracy uses Science to replace a Moral Authority of God, with subjugation to the governance powers of Science and boards of Scientists is the ultimate goal, with energy as the medium of exchange (energy credits) dictating what every person can consume and produce.

These devils thought the issue of global cooling would scare thinking people into embracing rule by Science. And when that failed they went 180 to try and push global warming as the end of humanity which only scientific control of everything can halt.

With such agenda at hand by the powers who actually run the world, doesn't L4B's speech about transforming of America take on more sinister meaning? ... It should. He works for 'them'. Academic Freedom is a mythos ...

Another is to do away with mandatory electives and require only core courses to get a degree. That would save students both money and time.

Let’s get this straight. The first casualty will be the colleges themselves. It’s already happening and way overdue.

Right now (today for the millennial readers), the general population cannot summarize the key events leading up to World War II or the power struggles during the war.

Culturally, we are doomed.

Brittle Leftists will not accept being questioned - in academia, politics, literature, theater, film, race relations, climate science, or any other field of human endeavor that they are actually capable of participating in. Civilization’s builders will just have to work without them.

No mention of Larry Summers, the Harvard President who was forced to resign because he dared to say that their might be intrinsic differences between men and women.

Without mention of that incident, it is worthless.

But, but... If they keep that ‘academic freedom’ thing going then how will they ever get to their communist utopia?

To communists professors like our current crop the end justifies any and all means. So what if they have to lie and get innocent people killed?

Hopefully it will only be those liberal/Marxist institutions that will die out.
Places like Liberty University, and especially Hillsdale (my alma mater) will grow and prosper in the re awakened freedom of the new era of conservatism.

Now that's what I call "liberal thinking".

In the last years we have approached the situation of France in 1968. Not fully there, but it was clearly in sight. France dealt with the issue by closing the universities. They have not recovered, but France survived without them. The election of Trump has probably saved us from a similar fate, as America begins to show the world how to flourish without the benefit of the self-appointed nitwit geniuses of the Left.

And apparently the universities told him to go stuff it because they are certainly not places where you are free "to inquire, to study and to evaluate" and have not been for the past 40 years.

College is a commodity just like many other things. If the college is not a value issue, change to a better one. If my kid was majoring in a useless subject, he would have to go it alone.
