CHARLESTON, S.C. A federal jury sentenced Dylann Roof to death on Tuesday for killing nine black parishioners during a massacre inside a church here in 2015.
Roof was convicted last month of 33 counts of federal hate crimes. The same jury that found him guilty on all counts last month deliberated Tuesday for just under three hours before deciding his sentence.
Relatives of the victims said the decision was the just outcome.
Justice was served, said Kevin Singleton, whose mother, Myra Thompson, was killed. It still doesnt change anything for the families, but I hope it can be a deterrent in the future.
I didnt think the verdict would affect me the way it has; I havent stopped crying, said Aja Risher, granddaughter of victim Ethel Lance. But Im so happy that their lives matter. Its not just a terrible tragedy that happened. It renews my faith a little bit.
If this case didnt warrant the death penalty, what case would? Risher said in a telephone interview. He took it upon himself to take nine beautiful lives. Now 12 people of all races have said his life is the price he needs to pay for that.

Are you f-----g serious? You "understand"?
What a crock of sh!t...
We don’t need apologists for cold-blooded murder in this community...
When are the busloads of liberals going to come out protesting his execution?
I have no sympathy for this piece of crap. I just hope he feels remorse before he is turned into worm food.
Death by bongo bongo.
I can’t understand, ichabod1, because those people didn’t do anything to him.
You can’t take generalized anger about something and take it out on people who never hurt you.
Doing something like that just makes you into a murdering monster, far worse than whatever he was angry about.
So, he was sentenced to death for the “hate crimes?”
These people were in church.
Death by a 9-person firing squad would be appropriate in this case. But then that would be waste of bullets for this POS.
As i am to do at times....I may condemn someone to eternal damnation(which is not my power)....but there is always that chance of someone seeing the light.....I saw it at about 47 years old...glad i didn’t die before i saw it. This lost soul is consumed with evil....but there is always hope....Let the sentence be carried out.....He has free will.
Amen.
Zap his sorry ass tomorrow.
I see no need for the taxpayers to fund his existence.
Hit your kness Dylan.
Oh, I know they were.
And he went to church with them that day, and then did what he did.
He is a true monster.
Dylan Roof is the ideal use for a bunch of bullets.
It took me a long time to see the light too.
I’m dumb. Slow learner.
But those people who posted the kind stuff, that’s impressive. It’s beyond my ability in this situation. I’m angry and disgusted by what he did, so it’s hard for me to look past those emotions.
I get slammed from some posters as not sticking to the thread but I always like to put in that these snakes will demand the death of a child in eight months or less but work to keep a killer alive for decades.
Burn in Hell you evil little shit!
He’s mentally ill. Life without parole.
Good, but that just means his lawyer will be making a good living off him for the next 30 years. No question of guilt - justice should be swift.
I know....it’s not easy....i get angry an internalize it.... He is in jail...Let Jesus Judge him....life in prison or on the end of a rope...our lives are short really....it will turn out in the end....I finally learned to let that anger go...i have been tested....I have lost a lot in life but somehow found grace......Stay safe my FRiend.
