CHARLESTON, S.C. A federal jury sentenced Dylann Roof to death on Tuesday for killing nine black parishioners during a massacre inside a church here in 2015.
Roof was convicted last month of 33 counts of federal hate crimes. The same jury that found him guilty on all counts last month deliberated Tuesday for just under three hours before deciding his sentence.
Relatives of the victims said the decision was the just outcome.
Justice was served, said Kevin Singleton, whose mother, Myra Thompson, was killed. It still doesnt change anything for the families, but I hope it can be a deterrent in the future.
I didnt think the verdict would affect me the way it has; I havent stopped crying, said Aja Risher, granddaughter of victim Ethel Lance. But Im so happy that their lives matter. Its not just a terrible tragedy that happened. It renews my faith a little bit.
If this case didnt warrant the death penalty, what case would? Risher said in a telephone interview. He took it upon himself to take nine beautiful lives. Now 12 people of all races have said his life is the price he needs to pay for that.

Now come the sleaze lawyers to try to save his sorry soul for the next twenty or so years.
May God have mercy on his soul.
Wow how about that, death. That’s contrary to all the liberals who said he would get a slap on the wrist.
Carry out the sentence with speed and finality (what’s missing from the punishment to make it really function as intended). 20 years between sentence and administration is nothing more than Liberal frustration of the Peoples’ will.
Good sentence, but I thought leftists despised the death penalty for any reason?
Now we can look forward to years of appeals filed by him and on his behalf - but in a dozen years or so, the family and friends of the victims should finally see justice done.
May God have mercy on him, forgive him his sins, and bring him to everlasting life, through Christ our Lord.
Agreed. “Speedy trials” don’t exist, much less speedy punishment, anymore.
Punishment loses its sting when it is untimely.
And I mean that for the public at large watching. Deterrent effect goes away when they know it will take forever AND they can get out of the alleged sentence.
Dude is obviously memtally ill
Just sayin
Tragic!
Good! Wish it was tomorrow.
What a shame! /s
Yup! White on black—death; black on white—probation.
Those same lawyers would work for free to keep the murder of the unborn legal.
The federal government has no business in this case. The state of South Carolina is very able to try this case and administer punishment. Dylann Roof will likely die of old age before the feds carry out the death sentence.
I see some posts throughout this thread of some kind kind people praying for this person.
That’s, uh, solid. That’s more than I am able to do. I gotta respect people like that, because they are better than me.
Here’s my comment for Mr. Roof.
Kill the damned thing with fire.
I don’t have a moral problem with this sentence, though I personally think life is much more punishment. The death sentence just expedites something that will happen anyway.
Just kill him already. God can sort it out later.
