Federal workers in Maryland and across the nation are bracing for reductions in head counts, civil service protections and even salaries when President-elect Donald Trump and Congress turn their attention to government spending later this year.
Trump, who ran on a promise to "drain the swamp," has identified hiring freezes at most federal agencies as a top priority for his early days in office. Republican lawmakers, many of whom have long advocated for reducing Washington's footprint, are looking to cut benefits and make it easier to fire poor performers.
The threats and preliminary steps taken by Congress have created anxiety for many of the government's 2.1 million employees, including some 300,000 who live in Maryland.
"People don't know what to believe, and they're in a state of uneasiness," said Witold Skwierczynski, a Catonsville man and the head of the American Federation of Government Employees council that oversees Social Security Administration field offices. "That's the feeling I hear. People are unsettled."
Fiscal conservatives, long stymied by President Barack Obama in their efforts to trim the government workforce, have read the November election as affirmation that voters want a slimmer federal bureaucracy. Though government employee issues were not discussed much during the election, federal regulations and spending were central to Trump's campaign.

Ping.
Unfortunately, and in spite of President Trump’s best intent, I predict there were be about as many government employees, if not more, when he leaves office as there were when he began. Congress isn’t going to cut as deeply as he wants. They never do.

State of uneasiness about your job? Don’t know what to expect?
Welcome to My Rust Belt World (since 1980)
I thought there was a poll that showed 25% of Federal Workers
would quit if Trump won.
This would be a good time for them to quit.
Make Government smaller again.
One can only hope for “deep cuts” in the federal workforce. As a whole, federal workers will never be conservative. They will never push conservative policies. That is the mistake that George Bush and his team made — they foolishly thought that they could harness the federal government for more moderate or even somewhat conservative, faith-based policies. It was never going to happen. So the way to make government more conservative is to drastically cut federal workers. If they aren’t there, they can’t meddle in peoples’ lives. Wholesale get rid of departments. It will do more good than harm.
It’s going to happen, DoD is ramping up a buyout program to reduce civilian staff by 20%.
A government employee replied to a private worker commenter, calling him a jealous snowflake that made bad life choices. Typical arrogance coming from a government employee.
I am old enough to remember fondly Reagan and Reductions in Force (RIF). See some of the boo hoos from 1982 - http://www.nytimes.com/1982/04/07/us/reagan-rif-effect-puts-bosses-in-typing-pools.html
Back in the 90’s my consulting co did salary surveys and government employees were being paid 120% pf the same job in the private sector. Now it is 172%.
so
Step one reduce all government employees pay by 50%. then have then count off and fire all odd numbers:-)
It may not have BEEN as bad as it is going to be but the ‘help’ of MSM running every arrogant thing BO has run up - I am sure it was not intentional to help DT decide but it sure pinpointed what BO & co have been doing.
Remember them running the articles about how the agencies were beefing up because they were ‘afraid’ of a freeze?
All these little gestures by BO are in place to make President Trump ‘look bad’ as it will be reported he is cutting OLD LINE programs that in effect were about a month old.
‘These Pols ain’t seen nuttin yet’....

ITEM---House Republicans revive obscure rule that allows them to slash the pay of [federal workers to $1]

House Republicans this week reinstated an arcane procedural rule that enables lawmakers to reach deep into the budget and slash the pay of an individual federal worker down to $1 a move that threatens to upend the 130-year-old civil service.
The Holman Rule, named after an Indiana congressman who devised it in 1876, empowers any member of Congress to propose amending an appropriations bill to single out a government employee or cut a specific program.
The use of the rule would not be simple; a majority of the House and the Senate would still have to approve any such amendment. At the same time, opponents and supporters agree that the work of 2.1 million civil servants, designed to be insulated from politics, is now vulnerable to the whims of elected officials.
The revival of the Holman Rule was the brainchild of Rep. H. Morgan Griffith (R-Va.), who is intent on increasing the powers of individual members of Congress to reassign workers as policy demands.
He favors a strategic application, likening it to a bullet from a sniper rifle rather than a shotgun. Its unlikely but not impossible that members will go crazy and cut huge swaths of the workforce, he said. (Excerpt) Read more at washingtonpost.com ...
Trump is a madman.
He will actually expect them to show up and do the job they are paid to do.
/s
Cut 2/3rds of the contractors and put the work in house as it once was that alone will dry up the pay to play BS....then get rid of the dead weight as any organization would do...it’s just business and should be handled as such.
Don’t forget indictments and trials for those federal workers who have given aid and comfort to the enemy.
Nope, going to be a significant reduction.
Trumps long record shows that will more likely be the case than not.
