Good question. I used to live in Michigan. Back then, UAW stood for, “U Ain’t Working!”

"the primary reason companies like Ford open plants in Mexico is that this is the only way they can build compact cars and sell them at a price that is low enough to attract buyers. Ford doesn't make much money on these cars"
This is hogwash. Toyota manages to sell a lot of U.S. made (small) fuel efficient cars. Enough even to support the manufacture of their larger vehicles...

Outsourcing increases corporate profits. It does not reduce the price of goods, and it never has. Outsourcing U.S. steel content to China reduces the COST to build a product, thereby increasing the MARGIN in that product when it's sold at the same price it sold for using U.S. steel (or more)... It works exactly the same way with outsourcing labor to Mexico. The cost goes down, but not the price.

The decision by Ford may have been a result of capital concerns, rather than anything Trump said, or might do. It costs a lot to start up a new manufacturing facility, even in Mexico.
Any capital invested in a new facility ties up cash that could otherwise be used for stock buy-backs which also increase corporate profits.

Yup - and meanwhile here is what the Ford CEO said:

Ford (F) CEO Mark Fields said the investment is a "vote of confidence" in the pro-business environment president-elect Donald Trump is creating. However, he stressed Ford did not do any sort of special deal with Trump.

Probably the skillset of the workers plus they already have plants in MI (they’d have to build from scratch in TX).

Wow, I am so impressed.

And yeah, winning is quite nice.

Even I, a deplorable of the highest level, didn’t much think of what Obama could do to save these businesses from leaving.

But Trump AIN’T EVEN BEEN SWORN IN YET!

This deplorable sits and wonder what the hell Obama was doing, selling our country?

Well yeah.

Quite obviously Donald Trump came to the White House to WORK and GET THINGS DONE. This is a refreshing concept. I think we better get ourselves strapped in as we haven’t seen anything yet.

but will the union back Trump for creating jobs for them???

Of course not. The jobs going to Mexico was "bad luck".

In order to better understand this Google "Robert Heinlein" and "bad luck".

Mexico Plunges into Fresh Crisis as Fury Swells over Gas Prices

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3510014/posts

The finance ministry announced Tuesday that the price of gasoline would increase by as much as 20.1 percent to 88 cents per liter on Jan. 1, while diesel would rise by 16.5 percent to 83 cents.

What if DJT said maybe I’ll go easier on the remittance taxes if you stop subsidizing gas? Ford needing to unload small cars in Mexico to keep the CAFE average up may have factored this into their decision.

Remember that under Hillary we were going to become the North American something with no borders. I think some of these companies figured they were planting roots in a country that would soon be the same country under Hillary.

If Michigan could become a right to work state they would be better off, perhaps the people of Michigan have become ENLIGHTENED enough to make this happen!!!! If Trump could start pushing the narrative of the advantages of RIGHT TO WORK and jobs NOT LEAVING the workers would get behind him!!!! UNIONS ARE USELESS and I am forced in CA. to belong in the grocery industry!!! I will say one thing about the union the medical benefits are GREAT that is the ONLY advantage!!! Younger folks however are more into catastrophic type care and would be fine choosing this type of plan!!! OSHA and worker comp is OUT OF CONTROL and unions PROTECT lazy USELESS workers that the rest of the team have to pull their weight on the job!!!!
