Why do so many people miss the Soviet Union?
Washington Compost Fake News & Disinformation ^ | December 21, 2016 | Adam Taylor

On Dec. 26, 1991, the Soviet Union officially ceased to exist. Its flag, with its famous hammer and sickle, was lowered outside the Kremlin at 7:32 p.m. Within a half-hour, the red, white and blue Russian flag had been raised in its place.

For almost 70 years, the totalitarian Soviet Union had curtailed the free speech and human rights of its citizens. By the late 1980s, it was painfully obvious that its economic policies had led to a dramatically lower quality of life than in the West.

But even so, few celebrated its demise.

The proper headline question is:

Why do so many American Liberal Socialist and Democrats miss the Soviet Union but Hate Russia?

But then the answer would be obvious and the article obviously Fake News.

People need to get in their heads that there is genuine hatred of America in this world, there are nations and peoples who do will take our money and protection and give us nothing back but hatred.

Take Japan - we protect them from invasion of the Red Chinese and their “thank you” is to refuse to accept that Pearl Harbour was wrong and a desire to screw is in business

Hard to say, but the California legislature is doing its best to replace it.

Most Democrats think the only thing wrong with the Soviet Union was that there were a bunch of smelly Russians in charge of it instead of themselves. That’s why the left hates Russia today. They will never forgive the Russians for the failure of Communism.

NOBODY misses the Soviet Union

Google "ostalgie". There is actually a sick trend of nostalgia for Stalinist oppression.

BINGO! ... The post of the day.

They will never forgive the Russians for the failure of Communism.

Again, dead on target, that's why Liberal Socialist American DemoRats are in love with Castro's Cuba and Venezuela, they will not abandon Communism (Marxism) until the last citizen dies.

And that is why the Russians were obviously guilty of all hacks and all DemoRat campaign, election and performance disasters.

The rotten Russian traitors to Communism threw Liberal Marxism in the trash can and immediately set out to destroy Communism's rightful heirs, American DemoRats, ... just out of spite.

A lot of money can still be made off a cold war. Libs know that and make a fortune off of it.

Also, libs would prefer that Americans view someone other than muzzies as our enemy.

"Why do so many people miss the Soviet Union?"

If they lived in the Soviet Union, they probably weren't the ones thrown into a Gulag, tortured by the police, or given a bullet in the back of the head.

Absolutely true.

NOBODY misses the Soviet Union

Sorry, American DemoRats miss the Soviet Union with every fiber of their being.

However, no person of wisdom misses the Soviet Union, I'm sure that was your intent.

As President Reagan said, “How do you tell a communist? Well, it’s someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It’s someone who understands Marx and Lenin.”

They didn’t call President Ronald Reagan the “Great Communicator” for nothing.

In 2003-04 I was deployed to Uzbekistan at Camp Stronghold Freedom, located in an old Soviet air base.

KBR employed young Uzbek women as office staff; attractive, fluent in English and dressed Western style.

But their nostalgia for the USSR which fell when they were still children was unbelievable. When I suggested that our camp could serve as a window to the West, one gal with waist length hair replied, “I want you to know one thing: I admire Josef Stalin!”

“Why, because he killed seventy million people!?”

“You need a strong hand to rule as large a country as the Soviet Union!” (she wished Uzbekistan was still part of something huge).

What else did they miss? Guaranteed employment, abundant food (?), annual Crimean vacation, the whole workers’ paradise. No Russians among them, Central Asians all, though they still spoke Russian.

One defended Alexei Stakhanov and Pavlik Morozov as heroes of the Soviet Union. The local souvenir shop sold mostly hammer-and-sickle stuff.

Go figure.

Q: Why do so many people miss the Soviet Union?

A: Because they never lived there!

There is a large American faction that seems to think they can hate the USSR back into existence by blindly trashing today’s Russia. If they prove to be right, they’ll deserve the consequences.

Not sure "so many people" is right, but people in general need something to believe in and to strive for, and political types usually overestimate the ability of economics to fill the bill.

True, but not the whole story. I have friends who immigrated from communist Hungary during the Cold War. They had friends who also immigrated from Hungary during that time, but willingly went back to live in the Soviet client state. The knowledge that there was a possibility of being unemployed, and thereby impoverished, in the free world stressed them out so much they returned to communism. If you had never known anything but communism, freedom to fail might look unacceptable. Some slaves cherish their chains.

It is normal for people to desire and miss stability, if they were able to get along within that stability. This is especially true for economic stability.
