Germans have a peculiar statist/conformist streak in them. It an impressive and useful thing if you are a general fighting massive 2-front wars, want clean streets, or when making excellent automobiles, but its a liability when the elites/oligarchs use that conformity against the citizenry.

The answer is clear, Germany is a sucker for poor leaders.
I guess the same letter could be addressed to Freepers in California; and likely the same issues. An opposition party which is entirely ineffective and only can muster the energy to put up token ‘me too’ candidates who manage to be not quite as liberal as their insanely liberal opponents.
As is often said on this forum, why bother with California, let it go down the hell hole. Cracking the nut in California means liberals are finished. That’s why you bother.

Combination of factors. Genetic losses due to two disastrous wars, as well as collective guilt for Nazi atrocities. Left-wing politicians like Merkel, who is the result of the former, and took advantage of the latter.

I have a friend that lives in Germany. While he would be considered “conservative” over there, his American wife is so damn liberal it makes me sick. They live in Germany and she defends these refugees as if they are her children. Very strange and I am not sure why. Unreal.
Because they have a history of blind obedience to authority?
2 World wars in 100 years, national dismemberment, and cities that are just modern reproductions and recreations of the actual towns that were burned to the ground.
In short: Germans dont want to make any more trouble than necessary, even if it means they get more trouble than necessary.

Germany lost two generations of fighting men in the 20th century. The remaining genes were deposited by those who for whatever reason were unable to contribute to the war effort.

I knew that the inhaler would be enough. “You are not getting the medicine that the doctor ordered?” our friends asked. “We don’t need it.” The doctor asked us, “Did you get the medicines i prescribed?” Husband answers, “No we didn’t think we needed it.” The doctor had never heard anything like that! He was furious.
