This year the Lefts annual War on Christmas has taken a bizarre turn with a Washington Post op-ed claiming that the Virgin Marys purity is offensive to victims of rape. In an article titled, Our culture of purity celebrates the Virgin Mary. As a rape victim, that hurts me, Ruth Everhart explains that especially in the Advent lead-up to Christmas, Mary becomes a problem for many Christians because of her pristine purity.
Mary set an impossibly high bar, Everhart writes. Now the rest of us are stuck trying to be both a virgin and a mother at the same time.
As a rape victim, this has been especially difficult for the author, she says, which led to her becoming a pastor, in order to come to terms with Marys story.
Everhart writes that she doesnt blame her sense of ruin entirely on the Virgin Mary. In fact, it isnt really Marys fault, she states; its the Churchs for manipulating Mary into a model of purity.
Mary is not responsible for what weve done to her story, she writes. Church culture has overfocused on virginity and made it into an idol of sexual purity. When it comes to female experience, the church seems compelled to shrink and distort.
To some people, vaginas are inherently dirty, she states. They can never be purified.
And isnt that the definition of hopelessness? Does it bother you that half of the human population is condemned to hopelessness because their body parts can never be pure? she asks rhetorically.
Never mind that you can attend a thousand Christian church services without ever hearing a sermon on purity. Never mind that virginity is rarely held up as a model in our sex-soaked western culture, even within our churches.

Being raped is no inoculation against being an idiot.
More proof that Liberalism is a meñtal illness.
Insane.
And btw, Mary was as sinful as any of us - and she had other kids later w/Joseph.
Leftist complain about things they don’t even believe.
True...the NT records Joseph and Mary had their own biological children (Matt 13:55-56; Mark 6:3; Galatians 1:19.
Sounds like she and Joseph had a normal marital relationship. That's gonna upset some.
The WaPo and the NYT are in hot competition for which entity has the largest collection of glittering jewels of collosal ignorance.
Given this joke of an article, I’d say the WaPo has a clear lead.
Actually, the Roman Catholic Church contends that Mary did die a virgin and that Jesus’ siblings were from Joseph’s previous marriage.
Am I missing something here?
Women who have used abortion for their own convenience, by their selfishness, offends the remaining live humans.
The weird bit on modern technology - there are a number of fertility clinics seeing single women wanting to have a baby via artificial insemination who ARE virgins.
So technically, there have been dozens at least virgin births via high tech.
And that’s aside from the less than 1% of pregnant girls who say they are virgins when having the baby.
Anti-Catholic bilge
There is nothing dirty or defiling about Mary having sexual relations with her lawful husband. It was necessary for Mary to be a virgin when she conceived Jesus but not afterwards. It takes some pretty creative interpretations to get around the verses you cited and maintain the idea of perpetual virginity.
So do ALLL VIRGINS offend her? Or is it just Mary?
These people from the left are so confused, it is pitiful.
I guess being raised in a libbie village stunts neuronal activity.
Well, if it makes them feel any better, she didnt die a virgin.
Don’t tell the Catholics that.
>>Mary set an impossibly high bar, Everhart writes.<<
So therefore don’t try.
mentally ill
People are sooooo damn stupid these days that is hard to believe. The only thing more incredible is that these so called journalists manage to stay in business printing crap like this.
Effed up and crazy world we live in.
The Roman church contention does not make it so.
None of the early Christians thought that Mary at any time lost her virginity. Why do you think you can find inscriptions extolling her as Ever-Virgin on catacomb walls? Sancta Maria Semper Vergine!
