Well, I never got quite that close. My dad did have to have his hearing testing regularly. It always checked out fine, but my mother was skeptical.

I worked the hot pit and barriers on F4s and I’d be very surprised if his hearing wasn’t affected. Mine is shot, but then again, I also worked EOD and armor, so I can’t blame it all on the Phantoms. There are many sounds that can’t be ameliorated with hearing protection; subsonic sounds are transmitted through the bones and still cause damage.

Hearing gets worse every year, but the government still doesn’t pay for hearing aids.
