The Supreme Court oral argument that cost Democrats the presidency
Washington Post ^ | December 7, 2016 | David Bernstein

Posted on 12/08/2016 3:47:19 AM PST by C19fan

The presidential election was so close that many factors were “but-for” causes of Donald Trump’s victory. One that’s been mostly overlooked is Trump’s surprising success with religious voters. According to exit polls, Trump received 81 percent of the white evangelical Christian vote, and Hillary Clinton only 16 percent. Trump did significantly better than the overtly religious Mitt Romney and the overtly evangelical George W. Bush. He likely over-performed among other theologically conservative voters, such as traditionalist Catholics, as well. Not bad for a thrice-married adulterer of no discernible faith.

Trump is a personality flawed champion for believers and traditionalists. So was Constantine a flawed champion of Christians. The thing about Trump was he is a fighter which is more than can be said, except with the possible exception of Cruz, of the rest of the GOP candidates for POTUS.

The author needs a jar of vasoline for his butthurt.

>>> Trump did significantly better than the overtly religious Mitt Romney and the overtly evangelical George W. Bush. <<<

It is called discernment. Not only of the Republican candidate, but of the Democratic candidate. In the case of Romney, the “overtly” part of the description reminds me of the parable of givers who make a big fanfare with their offering...they already have their reward.

Like Trump, Bush too had his personality flaws that Christians recognize and forgive. Throw Hillary into the mix, and one can see where some of Trump’s support comes from. I personally find God’s intervention in this election cycle to be darn near undeniable. That He can use a flawed man like Trump to His ends, is a common theme in Scripture. I had no problem reconciling the seeming contradictions and voting for this man. I stood out at the polling place on election day, sign in hand, which is something I did neither for Bush nor Romney.

I’m going to get flamed for this but that’s OK.

I think Trump is a Christianized pagan who is not personally redeemed but apparently under the influence of his wife has moved towards the Lord as he has gotten older. Romney is a heretic. He is not merely a Mormon but a Temple Mormon.

In such a case I’ll vote for the pagan every time

In short, many religious Christians of a traditionalist bent believed that liberals not only reduce their deeply held beliefs to bigotry, but want to run them out of their jobs, close down their stores and undermine their institutions.

Well, Mr. Bernstein, you provided a litany of examples of exactly this. It isn't just how Christians "feel", it's what they've seen with their own eyes.

Yes.

Would Mr. Bernstein itemize the atrocities of the Holocaust and then conclude "Jews feel the Nazis may threaten their liberties"?

He's probably quite familiar with using vasoline on his butt.

Or lower, as in “grab ‘em by...”

I have heard several woman speak of how they felt personally insulted and were hurt because SHE lost...and it was only because SHE was [nominally] a woman.

The lying the corruption none of that mattered because of anatomy.

Shallow as hell...but there it is...I usually suggest that there is a creme for that....

That is right. It is what we have seen for 8 years and absolutely up-chuck at the thought of more of it. Let’s add other things to the list: 22 Islambergs without oversight even as they prepare for jihad by their own admission and. after 8 years, still can’t call the ISIS, Hezbolla or whatever you want to add as terrorist organizations, condones jihad, condones rape and murder of women of any age and any religion even their own, touts the Qu’ran as a book of peace, then we need to go on into the destruction of our Constitution and Bill of Rights even as Obama sets things up to be declared our Fascist leader...we are not yet at the hours after the upcoming (I pray) inauguration...so we must be very alert for the usurpation of power by the outgoing Dems and we must make sure no one leaves the US before a legal examination of their suspected crimes takes place. Let us not expect Qatar to extradite. God bless us all...I leave nothing to Allah but all to the All.

I read the article.

As WaPo articles go, not bad.

The conclusion that the democrat persecution of anyone with a contrary opinion to same sex marriage cost them the election and the supreme court....probably true.

God moved and Christians of all stripes saw the threat and got out and voted.

And heard with our own ears. The degree of vicious bullying and rejection was breathtaking. It was beyond sneers of bigotry. It had morphed into threats and attacks of all sorts.

We were told we were done and at the end of history. Bitter clingers who needed to move. That our jobs were destructive and so were we. We weren’t needed any longer. On top of that, it was all our own fault.

Oh: it wasn’t just ‘Christians of a traditionalist bent’, either. I believe the tribe that was so demeaned was also characterized as white, rural gun owners.

What did we have to lose?

The real question is not whether Trump is a great Christian example, it is whether Christians fear a Trump presidency and administration infringing on their rights. The vast majority do not and feel relieved that Hillary did not win.
